Adrian Monk never thought he would see the day where he would thank GOD for technology. Technology meant change. Change scared the hell out of him. It wasn't until 2 weeks before Christmas that he realized change can be a lifesaver. It was a lifesaver that day.
Trudy's car had been in the shop so she had to take his. It had a remote control starter connected to a key chain.
"I'll see you later honey," she told him kissing him goodbye, "I love you forever and always"
"I love you more," he told her.
He got to work a little late. That was okay though. It wasn't a busy day. It wasn't ten minutes later that the phone rang. He picked it up, listened carefully at the other line and hung up.
"I need to borrow your car," he told his partner
Joe Christie didn't even think twice about it. He got out the keys and tossed it to his friend.
"Is everything okay," he asked
"No there was a bomb in Trudy's car," Monk said quickly, "Or the car she was driving today anyway… I need to get down there"
He was practically in tears when he got down there.
"Captain is she-"
"She's okay," he said, "she wasn't even in the car. The remote control gadget and the electronic thing probably was what saved her life. She was slightly injured in the explosion so they're just taking her to get her checked out"
Adrian sank down to the ground in relief. The ground was filthy but he could honestly care less at the moment. His wife was alive and safe. That was the important thing.
"Where is she," he asked
The captain pointed. She was on the stretcher, sitting up looking dazed but focused. He could tell that she was frightened but okay. He ran over to her and held on like he would never let go.
"Am I-," she began still dazed and afraid
"You're going to be fine," he told her as she closed her eyes a wave of pain shooting through her and passed as quickly as it came.
"It's okay," she assured him when he looked worried, "The fact that I can feel means I'm alive which means that whatever happens I'm okay"
"Thank GOD for that," he said, "and thank GOD for technicality today."
They talked for a few more minutes as the EMTs checked her out, bandaged up the injuries and pronounced that she was fine.
Adrian started to say something but she just looked at him, squeezed his hand and said, "I know"
