ALEX walks into the loft and sees JO sitting on the couch, obviously upset about something.
ALEX: Hey, what's wrong?
JO quickly wipes her tears and stands up to greet him with a smile.
JO: Nothing, how was work?
ALEX: It was good. Is everything okay? You know we aren't supposed to be keeping secrets from each other.
They laugh at the callback to recent events and she continues to avoid the question. ALEX starts to worry and walks toward her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. JO whispers something that ALEX can't quite hear.
ALEX: What?
JO: I'm sorry.
ALEX: For what?
JO: I'm sorry. I know how much you want to get married and I can't make that happen and I'm so sorry.
She is visibly upset, her lip is trembling.
ALEX: Hey...I can't believe you're upset about this. It's okay. I don't need that.
JO: It's not, Alex. It's not okay. All you ever wanted was a family and that commitment and I want that too and I want to be able to give that to you but I can't!
ALEX: Jo, look at me.
She avoided him until finally her tearful eyes met his.
ALEX: I don't need that.
She shook her head.
ALEX: I'm yours, okay? We are family. The only family we need, remember? I'm here. No matter what, okay? I'm here. I'm yours. And I don't need that.
He pulled her closer as she continued crying.
ALEX (whispering to her): I love you. I love you and we're gonna be okay. And we're gonna do whatever you want and it'll be okay, I promise. I promise. If you need a divorce, I'll make it happen just say the word. I love you, it's okay.
He felt her nod against him and he knew that they had to work this out, but they really would be okay.
