His name was Kashou.

He was born in an average Earth Kingdom village, and he was an average boy, but for one thing: his voice. His songs were peerless; no one could resist their awesome beauty. They taught him to play a lute, and he earned enough money as a singer to help their family get by.

"Kashou!" They called, "Sing for us, Kashou!" And he would sing, sing so beautifully that even the birds would stop mid-song to listen to his voice and his lute rise and fall in harmony. He lived in peace with his mother and father for many years.

Until the Fire Nation came. "Where is the one who sings like birds?" They asked, their harsh voices stopping the birdsongs for another reason. And when they gave no answer, the Firebenders began to Bend. House went up in flames, people's voice screamed.

"Kashou!" His father screamed as he went up in flames, burning in the terrible fire. "Your voice..." The words did not come, but Kashou understood: Your voice brought them here. You killed us.

Kashou, his lute in hand, blindly grabbed an arrow and set it on his lute string, pulled back, and... The arrow soared through the air...Right into the neck of a Fire Nation solider.

He ran. He ran so far that they could never catch him, they would never find him.

And as he stood in the clearing of the woods, he made a silent promise to himself: he would never use his gift, his voice, again. And as he fingered the lute strings and the arrows he had grasped, he looked to the sky. Kashou was no more.

His name was Longshot.
