A Greater Magic
A Final Fantasy X fanfic by Rosawyn
Yuna sat spellbound by Lulu's bedside, in awe of the new life that lay sleeping in Lulu's arms. Lulu herself looked very tired, and deservedly so after the day she had spent birthing her first child. Yuna noticed now how Lulu's usually immaculately styled hair hung loose about her shoulders, still damp with perspiration. Lulu also wore none of her trademark makeup, yet to Yuna she still looked beautiful as always…maybe even more so. She had an air of unadorned dignity about her. Maybe she wasn't as glamorous, but she was just as stunning.
Thinking back to when they were all growing up together in Besaid, Yuna remembered how she had always imagined that Chappu and Lulu would one day marry and have children. It was funny how things always seemed to turn out differently in the end then the way you'd imagined them. Yuna knew that though neither Lulu nor Wakka would ever be able to forget Chappu, they were happy. And Yuna knew Chappu would want them to be so.
Wakka burst into the room, interrupting Yuna's musings. "Lulu, I got you some food and some water to drink. I know you must be hungry after that hard labour, ya?" He placed the cup and plate on a small table on the other side of the bed from where Yuna sat. He grinned at Yuna. "Bet you're really proud of Lulu, Yuna? She was so brave, and I know I was thinkin' 'that musta hurt, ya?'"
"It did hurt," Lulu said calmly, "but we have all felt worse pain."
Wakka looked thoughtful. "Ya, I suppose you're right, Lulu. And at least we got the little guy out of this deal." He beamed with fatherly joy as his eyes rested on the tiny being snuggled against Lulu's breast.
"Did he eat well?" he asked.
"He ate some," Lulu said.
"The midwife said he did very well," Yuna said. "She said all babies need to learn to suckle and she will get better with practice."
The baby stirred and started to turn his head, his mouth open. "Does that mean he's hungry?" Wakka asked.
"Yes," Lulu said as she helped the baby to latch.
Wakka grinned. "Sorry I have so many questions. You know I've seen a lot of babies, but I never really paid much attention until now I have one of my own, you know?"
"It's alright," Lulu said. "I didn't pay much attention to babies before, either. We'll learn together."
He gently stroked his son's hair, watching him suckle. "You drink up, little man, so you can grow up big and strong and play Blitz ball like your old man, ya?"
He sat on the side of the bed and helped Lulu sip the water he had brought since her hands were busy holding her nursing baby.
Yuna looked at the family and was moved by the tenderness they showed. She wondered if her mother and father had sat thus the night she was born. She felt glad to imagine that they had. She imagined that her father had stroked her newborn hair and helped her mother to sip water.
The tiny baby sighed as he let go of his Lulu's breast and fell peacefully asleep in Lulu's arms. Watching him, Yuna was filled with wonder. She knew Lulu to be one of the most powerful magic users in all of Spira and had grown up watching her friend learn and grow stronger in her craft. She had fought along side Lulu and seen her reign merciless and terrible destruction upon the most dangerous of monsters and fiends. But this, this giving of life, this creative, gentle selflessness she'd witnessed in the past hours seemed to Yuna to be a still greater, more powerful, and more awe-inspiring magic.
