I was there at the beginning.
I was there when they began to discover each other. When Yugi first began to gain more confidence, encouraged by the soul he called "his other half." I watched as Yami watched over all of us, first because we were Yugi's friends, then because we were his friends as well.
I was there when Yami began to look at Yugi as more than his friend. When Yugi realized just how much Yami really was the other half of his soul. I watched as they became closer than I had ever guessed possible, and I cheered them on.
I've been there since the beginning.
Now I'm here at the end.
I know it's the end. Why else would Yugi be using the shadows to kill any creature that came close to him? It had to be the end; why else would Yami be so still, covered in blood? He looks so solid, but I can tell he's fading away. I can actually see through him.
I know that Yami must already be gone, or else Yugi would have never left his side.
I am here at the end, and I am the only one.
The others are out. Yugi had turned those empty eyes on me after the Puzzle had shattered, and he had asked me to get them out. And, since I couldn't deny the request of the best friend I've ever had, I made them leave. Grandpa Mutou and Anzu were the hardest, but it got easier as Yugi looked up with eyes that were now glowing white as he casually tore the head off the first of the shadow creatures.
But I didn't leave. I couldn't. Somewhere between being fascinated and being horrified, I knew that this was something I could not leave. Someone had to witness what was to happen. The Pharaoh had fallen, and he was taking Yugi with him.
I knew they had loved each other. I hadn't fully realized that when one went, so would the other.
I don't think any of us did.
Yugi was committing suicide, and there was nothing I could do to stop him. All I could do was watch in awe. Whenever they had used the Shadows before, it had always been Yami. Now it was Yugi who called the darkness forth, and used it to paint everything red with blood.
The final battle wasn't even worth mentioning. The man who had started this all had fallen to the feral creature he had created. Then Yugi, literally dripping blood, had turned back to face me.
He smiled. If I live to be a hundred, I never want to see that smile again. That sad, happy, insane smile. But I doubt I ever will. Yugi had smiled, and walked back over to Yami's almost gone form. He scooped together the ruined Puzzle, then his white eyes turned towards me. I'm no coward, but I felt something freeze inside when his attention focused on me.
Next thing I knew, he waved at me, and I was being shoved outside by a wall of darkness. Once I was out, then entire building came down, filling the air with dust and the deafening roar of a collapse. It took a bit, but all of us made it out of that mess.
They didn't find any bodies inside.
I was there at the beginning of Yu-gi-oh's reign, and I was at the end. And I don't think any of us will ever recover from it.
