One more moment
"I don't know…" Edward gave up, just like that. "I don't have all the answers, Roy!" He looked so beaten, so sad, so pitiful, and so alone. "It should have worked! Damn it I don't know why it didn't!" Edward was sitting on the floor in front of a large transmutation circle. A forbidden transmutation circle, drawn across the middle of his apartment room in his own blood. He didn't even have the ingredients out yet, he was just drawing the circle.
"What the hell would make you think that this was in any way okay!" It wasn't really a question, but Edward answered anyway.
"I don't know, Roy!" He sat in silence, hot tears flooding his face. He was shaking so violently as he sat on the floor, staring down at the circle. Roy sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose with his white gloved hand.
"Edward, you of all people know this wouldn't work." After a moment of silence, Edward's cracked voice almost startled Roy. Almost.
"I should have done something…" Roy looked up, almost confused. There was nothing he could have done for his mother, and Roy had thought he had moved on and was trying for Alphonse now.
"Edward, there was nothing you could have done." Roy walked over, sitting down next to Edward, who sat there shaking his head.
"You don't understand"
"Well I'm trying to." Edward took his eyes off the floor and looked at Roy and Roy could see all the tears on his face. Roy could see all the pain. Roy felt like he almost knew the answer, looking into Ed's eyes. The one thing left in Ed's life that he allowed people to know mattered to him. Alphonse.
It made sense since Edward had returned from the mission without him. "Edward… what happened?" Edward cast his eyes back down to the circle on the floor.
"He's gone, Roy. Just like every single person I care about! They're all gone! Him… Mom… Winry… Hughes…" Roy felt his stomach drop at the mention of his dear friends name. He knew Winry had moved back to Resembool and was engaged. She wasn't planning on coming back, either. Didn't like the city much, and Roy knew Edward had took that one rough even if he wouldn't admit it.
Looking down at Ed, Roy felt he could see everything. Everything in the boy, but nothing at the same time. Edward had a habit of not showing pain or sorrow in front of people. In front of Roy especially, so Roy felt he was actually seeing Edward a bit. It was a wonderfully bitter sensation, seeing him like this. Roy wanted the best for him.
Coinciding with this everything was nothingness at the same time. Edward looked like nothing because he felt like he had nothing. He had lost everyone. Everyone except Roy. Roy put his arms around his subordinate, this confused lost and alone little boy who had been deprived of any kind of childhood.
"Edward… you're wrong. You haven't lost me." Edward felt the warmth of Roy's body pressed against his as he closed his eyes. He heard Roy talk to him, but he didn't say anything. "And you're not going to lose me."
Ed wrapped his arms around Roy. He didn't want to lose Roy, the one thing left in his life. That one person who had been there even when Ed tried pushing him out or refused to acknowledge him. Roy was always there.
After about half an hour, Edward's tears were stopping. He was slowly drifting off in Roy's arms. Roy bent his head down, kissing the top of Ed's head. "You should get some sleep." Ed shook his head.
"I don't want to risk you not being there…"
"I promise I'll be right by your side when you wake up."
"I just want one more moment…"
