Title: Hero
Disclaimer: I do not own Supernatural, all due respect to the lucky people who do.
A/N: I was finally able to get my muse running again so I should be posting another one shot later this week. Enjoy!
Around noon, Sam stood from his place at the table and cautiously moved closer to one of the shabby motel beds. More importantly, he moved closer to the bed Dean was currently asleep on. He peered down at his older brother's unconscious face. It was free of the lines of worry that obscured his features during his waking hours. He looked…peaceful. Peaceful was not a word one could use to describe Dean Winchester often.
Sam sadly mulled over that fact.
Dean never had a break, and he never asked for one. He just kept on going and working and fighting without a backward glance.
At least Sam had a time away from all that in a world where all he had to worry about was finals. Dean never had that chance. He sacrificed that chance so Sam wouldn't have to, no matter how much it hurt…because that was Dean. He was the protector, the one who literally laid his life on the line every single day of his life and rarely - if ever - complained. He was the hero.
Sam sighed and looked back over at his brother's sleeping form. Sam remembered all the times when he was little and used to climb in bed with his big brother who he instinctively knew would keep him safe from the monsters and nightmares that haunted his dreams, even when he was still innocent and didn't know those monsters truly existed. Dean had always been the one to save him. Whether it be from demons and wedigos or from bullies and bad dreams, it was always Dean. That's what he missed the most at Stanford. While he was happy to have a sense of normalcy and able to live the way he wanted to live, he had missed the warmth and safety that came with having Dean nearby.
Dean stirred beside him and his eyes groggily began to open before flinching back from the onslaught of light.
"Morning, Sunshine." Sam greeted sarcastically.
"How long was I out?"
"About 6 hours. You needed it after the hunt last night so I figured I'd let you sleep."
"huh. You find us a case?" the elder Winchester asked.
"Oh, yeah. Bobby called a while ago and said he found a hunt for us in Montana. We should head out after dinner."
"Let's make it after lunch instead. We should get to the job."
Sam just smiled and began packing up. Yeah, Dean was the hero.
