CHAOS: THE BATTLE OF WIZARDS™ created by Julian Gollop
The opening sequence of "Lucky Star" appears on a computer screen. Within seconds after the shot of Konata and her friends, the QCFP logo appears. Then, Konata herself begins talking with her gaming headset on.
"Welcome everyone to a special edition of QCFP!" Konata said emphatically. "We got a grudge match ready in waiting! I recently just received a challenge from Ako and Riko Suminoe, ironically here in Saitama. They think they can beat me in my own game, well I got a game for them!"
Konata places a picture of a video game on her webcam. "This is Chaos: The Battle of Wizards, created by the same mind behind X-COM," Konata adds. "Unfortunately, I don't own a ZX Spectrum. But, doing research, I managed to understand the game. It's like a precursor to Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic: The Gathering with a little bit of chess thrown in.
So, along with Kagami, Tsukasa and Miyuki-san, I give who I like to call the Tomax and Xamot of Saitama to bring as many friends as they like! I'll show them all that I'm DOWN-RIGHT-FIERCE!" Konata motions the Hadouken toward her webcam as it turns off, concluding her webcast.
The next day, Konata arrives in Tokyo's Koto Ward at Tokyo Big Sight, Japan's premier convention and exhibition center, also known as "The War Zone at Ariake", where Comiket is held twice a year. At the entrance into the convention center, Tsukasa waves to Konata, Miyuki waves slightly while covering her mouth, and Kagami is looking at Konata with annoyed anger.
"You really put your foot in it, this time, didn't you?" Kagami grumbled. "Again you had to include me into your crazy games!"
"But, Kagami, if I don't have a fourth teammate backing me up," Konata begs in her MariMite voice, "we would be down by one and we'd be outnumbered."
"OK! I'll play along!" Kagami growled. "Just stop with the MariMite voice. It annoys me!"
"I'm a little nervous, Kona-chan," Tsukasa said. "I don't even know how to play this game."
"It's easy, Tsukasa," Konata replied. "Just select your spells and cast them. I've emailed you all the rules I downloaded off the Internet. They'll help."
"This game might be fun," Miyuki said. "It's certainly a break from Space Cadet."
Konata and the others were about to begin when someone shouted her name. She froze solid as Kagami, Tsukasa and Miyuki turned around.
"Oh man!" Konata grumbled. "The Troublemint Twins have arrived…"
Standing at the bottom of the stairs were Ako and Riko Suminoe. Behind them were their brother Keita who seemed a bit worried.
"You got a lot of nerve calling us out like that, Izumi!" Riko snarled. "I'll bash you good with my own two hands!"
"Save some room for me, Riko!" Ako added. "Nobody disrespects us like that and gets away with it!"
"Come on, you two," Keita said, trying to calm his sisters down. "I don't think Izumi-san meant that "Tomax and Xamot" remark."
"Yeah, Kona-chan always likes to fire up the competition," Kagami explained to Ako and Riko. "That's why I get wrapped up in these hairball games of hers."
Suddenly, out of nowhere, Keita gets tackled from the legs down. Ako and Riko look back as Konata and the others also look. Slightly hovering over his waist with her skirt pulled up is Mikazuki Kiryuu. Ako and Riko look at her angrily as they're still upset with Konata.
"Did I do something wrong, AkoRiko-sempai?" Mikazuki asked.
"1,000 TIMES WRONG!" Riko growled, punching Mikazuki over the head. "Once, get off of Keita! Second, don't combine our names like that! Third, I'm PRETTY pissed off here!"
"You don't have to be mean, Riko-sempai," Mikazuki cried. "I came here because I was sent here!"
"Did Kiryuu-sensei ask you to come here?" Ako asked.
"No, it wasn't Yuuzuki," Mikazuki answered, and then pointed to Konata. "I came because of her. It's for her Wizard Magic Battle, or something."
"Almost right, Mikazuki-chan," Konata said. "It's Chaos: Battle of Wizards. And I've chosen this place to be a special attraction before the 94th Comiket."
Riko suddenly went from angry to pale, because this was a public exhibition and huge crowds always tend to scare her.
"When this is over, Izumi…" Riko mumbled, "…I'll make you suffer for this…"
"Relax, Ako-nee, Riko-nee," Keita said, putting his hands on their shoulders. "You'll do fine. You get out there and win one for the team."
Ako and Riko hug Keita affectionately while Mikazuki is hopping around feeling sad.
"Kinda paints a cute picture, you know?" Tsukasa said. "Look how happy they are."
"Yeah, but that was close," Kagami sighed with relief. "I thought we were gonna have a bloodbath out here."
"OK, folks, save it for the award show," Konata interrupted. "We gotta get inside, and then get changed."
"Changed?!" everyone said in shock.
"Yeah, it said in my email," Konata explained. "This is a cosplay battle. We'll be dressing up in costume and then we enter the virtual world!"
"If Ako and Riko don't kill you, I WILL!" Kagami snarled.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, a mysterious person cloaked in black scares the girls and Keita as it looks over them like a snake about to strike.
"Is this the Chaos challenge?" the mysterious figure asked in a booming deep voice.
"Yes! This is the place!" Konata shrieked in terror. "But who are you?!"
"Let's just say I'm familiar with all of you," the cloaked figure replied. "I also heard that this is a cosplay challenge. Am I right?"
"Yes!" Konata screamed. "But that's not what I wanted you to…"
Before Konata could explain further, the cloaked figure loomed over her and scared herself silent. Kagami was concerned that Konata found herself deep in trouble.
"I already have my costume," the cloaked figure says, "so the game is on."
The mysterious cloaked figure simply walks ahead into the convention center leaving Konata almost about to have a heart attack.
"Kona-chan, are you OK?" Kagami asked.
"I guess so…" Konata struggled. "BUT THAT WAS SCARY!"
Konata hugged Kagami crying on her shoulder as the rest of the group were concerned about Konata and who that mysterious cloaked figure was.
"Who was that?" Ako wondered.
"Hell if I know," replied Riko, "but I won't lose no matter what!"
"Mikazuki-chan, could that hideous cloaked person be Kiryuu-sensei?" Ako asked.
"My otaku sister may have a lot of costumes, yes," Mikazuki answered, "but I don't think she has something THAT sinister!"
"Let's go, Konata. We'll take that guy down," Kagami said assuringly.
"You're right, Kagamin. The Chaos Challenge must go on!" Konata said as she sprang back with more confidence. Keita and the rest of the girls all walk into the convention center. Keita headed into the crowd while the girls were all heading for the changing rooms.
After emerging from the changing rooms, everyone had different costumes on. Kagami's face was gloomy with an annoyed feeling as she was dressed in a miko outfit, which is what she always wears during spiritual holidays.
"Of all the outfits Kona-chan had to pick," Kagami complained, "she gives me this outfit! I normally wear this at the house during the holidays! I keep telling her it's not cosplay!"
Konata comes out in her North High School uniform used in the Haruhi Suzumiya series covered with a black cape and a black witch's hat, the exact outfit worn by Yuki Nagato.
"In a battle of wizards, one must BE a wizard!" Konata chimes. "I hope I do Nagamon proud!"
Tsukasa felt very shy as she stepped out as a White Mage from the original Final Fantasy series, while Miyuki stepped out dressed as Final Fantasy VII character Aerith Gainsborough.
"Well, I can clearly see I stick out like a sore thumb," Kagami grumbled. "I don't know why I get roped into these things."
"Relax, Kagamin," Konata said. "Not everyone will notice. Still, we gotta look our best for the crowd."
"I can't begin to imagine what the twins and Mikazuki would look like," Kagami thought.
Ako and Riko look mortified as they stepped out staring a hole into Konata.
"What?" Konata smiled. "You ARE twins, after all."
"I look ridiculous…" Riko grumbled as she is dressed like Porom from Final Fantasy IV, and Ako as Palom from the same game.
Mikazuki comes bouncing out of the change room dressed as Silica from Sword Art Online, letting her panties show with every skip.
"This is so cute!" Mikazuki chimed. "I might use this to charm Keita-sempai later on!"
"Well, that's 7, so far," Konata said as she counted. "That leaves that creep with the cloak."
"No doubt about it, we'll have to face it head on," Kagami said wearily.
Last to enter was the mysterious cloaked figure as it made its way toward the other 7 girls. Keita looked at the sidelines wondering what will happen. Suddenly, the cloaked figure tears its cloak off and the girls got the shock of their lives. Konata fainted out of anger and shock. Keita himself suddenly gets a nosebleed after seeing who was behind that cloak.
The person was behind the cloak was Miharu Mikuni. Her outfit was a witch's outfit worn by Anri Sonohara from DuRaRaRa! that Erika made for her.
"Miharu-chan?!" Ako shouted. "That was YOU?!"
"You're kidding me!" said Kagami in disbelief. "That THING was you?"
"Why the scary cloak, Miharu?" Riko questioned. "Trying to intimidate us?"
"I'm pretty well-known in Saitama now," Miharu blushed. "Besides, I was afraid Keita-kun would recognize me."
Konata finally recovered from her shock as Miharu told her that she was the cloaked figure.
"You sure are bold, Miharu," Konata said in a cynical voice. "I never expected a dandere such as you would be THIS daring."
"Well, thanks to Ako-san, Riko-san and Keita-kun," explained Miharu, "I managed to express myself more often. I've become the most popular girl in town!"
"Well, you don't need to make a spectacle of yourself, Mikuni-san," Miyuki suddenly spoke.
"Do I detect even a hint of jealousy, Takara-san?" Miharu remarked. "I never expected this from you before."
"OK, save it for the arena, girls!" Konata said standing in between Miyuki and Miharu, but the two went toward each other and Konata got her face crushed between Miyuki's breasts and Miharu's breasts. Kagami still had that tsundere face while the rest of the girls were shocked to see Konata get crushed in an erotic fashion. Keita was slightly smiling as he watched.
After the tension died down, Konata gathered the girls up and presented them each with a stack of cards.
"These are Chaos cards," Konata explained. "Each of you have a different spell to cast. Spells in this game are magic spells, artifacts and creatures. Right now, all but one card are blank. The one card visible is DISBELIEVE. If you think that a creature cast by one of your enemies is an illusion, Disbelieve erases it from the field."
"Creatures can attack other creatures as well as wizards, so be on guard." Konata continued. "You can ride certain creatures and move with them, but other wizards can try to destroy your mount. As always, last wizard standing wins! Any questions?"
"My brother Kouki once played Chaos Reborn before," Miharu said, raising her hand. "From what I remembered, there was a time limit for the battle. If time ran out, a draw will occur with the remaining wizards. Correct?"
"Yes, the game has a time limit," answered Konata, "but that also can be arranged. For this battle, it's an 8-way battle to the death with NO time limit! It truly is last wizard standing!"
"And what are we competing for?" Riko asked. "You couldn't have us come out here for nothing, you know!"
"I actually made a Pride of Saitama championship belt for you to keep!" Konata said, as she holds up a championship belt with the symbols of Saitama and a lion in the center. Konata walks up to Keita and hands him the championship belt.
"You place this around the waist of the winner of this battle, Keita-san," Konata said.
Keita was a bit nervous, but he decided to hold Konata's belt as the others watched. Konata walked back and held up two bags: one with plastic tiles that have a black number, the other filled with plastic tiles of different colors.
"Each of you will now take a turn pulling out a tile from each bag," Konata explained further. "Once you have your spawn point and your color, head for that area and the game will begin."
The arena has been marked in a grid of 10 spaces down and 15 spaces across. Each spawn point had a holographic image of the QCFP logo spinning. Multicolored lights surround the spawn point. Kagami reached into each bag and pulled out a purple tile and the number 7.
"Look, Kagamin. Purple just like your hair. It's perfect!" Konata chuckled.
"Don't patronize me," mumbled Kagami, looking mean and dumbfounded. "I'm next to last! At least I'm ahead of the unfortunate soul who gets number 8."
The spawn point at J-8 illuminated a purple beam and shows a hologram of Kagami. As she is walking towards the arena, Tsukasa begins drawing from each bag. She reveals a gold tile and the number 3. The spawn point at A-15 illuminated a yellow and orange beam and displayed a hologram of Tsukasa.
"What a relief!" sighed Tsukasa. "I thought I would be stuck in last place and have to endure the whole battle."
Miyuki went next and managed to pull out a red tile and the number 1. The spawn point at A-1 began to glow red like the fires of Hell and displayed Miyuki's hologram.
"Looks like I'm first to act," Miyuki thought, "and I'll be opposite of Tsukasa."
Tsukasa and Miyuki went to the arena as Konata began to turn to the remaining girls holding the bags.
"OK, ladies, line up!" Konata chimed. "We still have 4 more spots open!"
"I'm next, shrimp," Riko said, pushing the others out of the way to reach into Konata's bags. Riko pulls out a yellow tile, but after pulling the number 8, she began to feel sick to her stomach.
"On second thought, Ako, you were next. I'm sorry," Riko said frantically.
"You're not getting off THAT easy, Riko," Konata pouted. "You either play the game or you forfeit the match."
Riko thought about quitting, but seeing Keita with the belt Konata handed him earlier, Riko had a thought of him wrapping the belt around her waist and then wrapping his arms around her waist in passion.
"OK, shorty," Riko dejectedly sighed. "I'm in…"
Riko's spawn point at J-15 glowed yellow like the sun and her hologram got most of the men in the crowd cheering loudly.
Ako was next and pulled out a blue tile and the number 2. Ako's spawn point at A-8 began to glow blue and Ako's hologram shown. All the men in the crowd love Ako and Riko a lot.
"Looks like I'm next after Miyuki-san," Ako thought. "This will be interesting indeed."
Mikazuki was next and pulled out a silver tile and the number 4.
"I hate this!" Mikazuki whined. "I feel like I jinxed myself!"
"Relax, Mika-chan," Konata smiled. "You'll do fine. Trust me."
"OK," Mikazuki said, smiling a weary smile as she makes her way to her spawn point, E-1. The lights began to glow silvery gray as a hologram of Mikazuki shown. Most of the men heckled her calling her "flat", but a few people in the audience loved Mikazuki.
"Well, Izumi-san, it's just you and me now," Miharu pointed out.
"Just pick your location!" Konata mumbled as she got rid of the bags. Her left hand had the remaining colored tiles and her right hand had number tiles. Miharu closes her eyes and grabs one tile from each hand. She opens her eyes and looks at a green tile and the number 6, leaving Konata with a white tile and the number 5.
The final spawn points lighten up. Konata's at E-15 was like being blessed by a god, while Miharu's were green like a Christmas light show. The holograms began to show as everyone cheering loves Konata and her gaming channel. When Miharu's hologram shown, the men went manic and crazy after seeing how big her breasts are.
"Well, it can't be helped," Miharu smiled. "That's the price of fame, I guess."
"Yeah, well, keep it buttoned up next time!" Konata pouted.
"Good luck, Izumi-san, and may the best wizard win!" Miharu chimed.
Miharu proudly strutted herself into the arena as Konata stood there, lost in thought about Miharu's sudden popularity.
"She just ruined the dandere archetype," Konata cried.
She looks at her white tile and the number 5 she was left with, clenched her fist and had a determined look on her face.
"No time to waste on trivial details," she said, realizing what's at stake. "It's Clobberin' Time!"
Konata headed into the arena and reached her spawn point below Tsukasa, above Riko and across from Mikazuki. The lights began to dim until it turned completely black. Then, a DJ began playing arena-like rock songs pumping up the crowd as the Chaos battle begins. Konata began to look over her cards as she sees the other girls looking over theirs.
A spotlight shines at E-8 and the DJ plays the famous "Lucky Channel" theme song.
"Hiya Luckies!" shouted a familiar voice.
"Welcome to a special edition of "Lucky Channel" live at Tokyo Big Shot in Ariake!"
Ako and Riko were dumbfounded, while Mikazuki was excited and Miharu just adjusted her glasses. Konata and her friends knew what was up.
"And hosting this premiere battle to the death is a true magical idol, yours truly Akira Kogami!" she exclaimed.
"The game is Chaos: Battle of Wizards. 8 wizards enter, 1 wizard leaves. No time limit. No Holds Barred!"
"Akira-sama, the match is about to start!" shouted Minoru Shiraishi, Akira's personal assistant. "Get out of there or you'll be zapped!"
"Like Hell I am!" Akira shouted back to Minoru. "I didn't get to finish my opening dialogue!"
"There's no time!" Minoru shouted back. "They're gonna start the show!"
"The staff can kiss my ass if they think I'm gonna budge from this spot!" Akira screamed out.
Suddenly a bolt of lightning strikes Akira and paralyzes her. Minoru climbs over the barricade and grabs a nearby dolly to wheel Akira away to the medical room.
"So help me…" Akira barely mumbled, "…I am gonna raise Hell as soon as I get treated."
"Can't say I told you so, idiot," Minoru whispered back.
As Minoru rolled Akira out of the arena, Konata and the others were having a laugh.
"Akira-sama sure comes up with a lot of stuff, doesn't she?" Konata said.
"Well, it's a lot different than the previous Lucky Channels, that's for sure," Kagami replied.
Then, the DJ plays Motörhead's song "The Game" as the battle finally begins.
"This is it!" Konata shouted enthusiastically. "IT'S TIME TO D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D-DUEL!"
