The Beginning Of The End
Unknown POV
The man and woman walked along the tall wheat grass of Lothal. They both bore the marks of poverty and sickness. Even though they slouched as they walked, their eyes had fire in them. A burning passion to make things right. The woman gazed fondly at the man.
"How long do you think we have till they come for us? Before we make a mistake big enough so that it can't be ignored?" She asked. The man just looked at her and continued to walk through the field. The woman sighed but continued to follow him. They walked for quite a while, reaching the old comm tower. They paused at the entrance. The man turned and placed his hands on her shoulders.
"There is no way to tell when the world will come to an end but we must protect our son till the day comes. You understand that, don't you?" He moved his right hand to cup her cheek. His thumb was creating tiny circles now. A spark lit in the woman's blue eyes.
" I will do anything to protect him. Unfortunately, he is only one person. We must think of the others. We have to put the Resistance first and then our son," she looked upon the man with sadness.
The man looked at her with regret. "I'm sorry you feel that way, but Ezra means more to me than leading a bunch of cowards to nowhere." He started to move inside, but the women put her hand out and stopped him.
"I can't believe you are giving everything away, and just for one child? There are thousands of kids out in the universe who are starving like Ezra is now, and we must save them." She gave him a little push. "I know Ezra is our child but some sacrifices have to be made. Especially, since we started this Resistance with a goal to win. You have to stay by me and lead. If Ezra happens to die along the way, we can't let that stop us." A single tear fell from her eyes. "I'm sorry Ephraim. I love you. Say you love me, please." Ephraim looked at Mira with pity. Without saying a word, he gently pushed her back and entered the comm tower.
"Ezra!" Ephraim smiled broadly and opened his arms.
"Daddy! You're back!" A 6 year-old came running into his dad's arms. "I missed you!" Ezra giggled and squeezed his dad as hard as he could. Mira entered from behind. "Mommy! I can't believe your both back!" Ezra shouted as he ran to hug his mother. Mira flinched when Ezra made contact with her but Ezra did not notice. Ephraim narrowed his eyes at her, making her hug Ezra for a fleeting moment.
"Alright," Mira discarded Ezra and walked around him, "lets get going." Ephraim frowned at her but quickly got to business.
"Come on Ezra. Lets go see Mazi." He picked up Ezra, giving him a kiss on his cheek. The mysterious family moved into a machine that any outsider could call a dumbwaiter, but was actually an elevator to the underground camp. They stepped out of the elevator and walked only a few feet to a gate. This was the Resistance. A collection of farmers, bounty hunters, and homeless people that want to make a difference in the world, starting with the Empire. Mira and Ephraim Bridger ran the Resistance with their only child Ezra. If only they knew that ,shortly, there wasn't going to be a Resistance anymore.
