Author's Note: Well, this just popped into my head and wrote it down. I've never written something like this before. Sorry if it's not good enough. ( I tried my best in writing this fic. Let me know what you think. Dedicated to my sister and my Sandle-buddies.
"Wear this." Grissom put the ring excitedly on Sara's finger. It was a fine jewelry. The beautiful stone on top, shone and sparkled as a streak of light hit it. He looked at her, his eyes sparkled with glee.
She eyed the ring and felt uneasy. She didn't want the elegant gift. She refused to accept it. Her heart refused to accept it. She opened her mouth, wanting to say something. She had to say it now. It's the perfect time to say it.
Grissom kissed her and held her tightly in his arms. "Happy Birthday."
She closed her mouth as no words escaped and smiled. She forced to make one She had no choice but to return his hug. She hugged him tightly.
She still had to tell him
Sara sat in the break room, her gaze not leaving the ring. She had been waiting for Greg who had told her to wait for him.
"Sara."
"Yeah?" She turned her back and looked at a newly arrived Greg, who seemed to be keeping something behind his back.
"Close your eyes."
"Why?"
"Just do it, please. It's a surprise." He smiled. So did, Sara.
"Fine." She closed her eyes as Greg approached the table. He placed something on top of it and faced Sara.
"Open your eyes when I say open, okay?"
She nodded.
Greg made sure nothing was wrong. When she was convinced that everything seemed right he spoke. "Open."
Sara opened her eyes and smiled. On the table was a slice of cake and a candle set on top. Beside it, there was a birthday card.
"Happy Birthday, Sara. Make a wish." Sara closed her eyes and thought for a moment.
She thought of Grissom. She thought of the ring. She thought of their relationship. She thought of the day when he said he loved her -- and the day when she made the biggest mistake of her life, retuning his love with a her non existing love for him. She didn't love him. And she needed to tell him that. She's hurting him without him knowing it. She said that she loved him -- a lie. Why did she do it? Did she felt sorry for him? Is she desperate? She looked for an answer and found nothing. All she knew is that she didn't want this lie to continue, their relationship to continue. She didn't want to be with Grissom. She never wanted to be with him. Grissom held her hand tightly -- but she'll let go. She's letting go.
She took a deep breath and blew the candle.
"What did you wish for?" Greg asked.
"Freedom" She said slowly, sadly. Tears started to fall from her eyes.
"Freedom, from a man I never loved from the beginning."
She held her hand up and took off the ring.
