Drabble, prompt: The red pen
As Ron and Hermione were walking out of potions class, Ron saw that she had dropped something. He picked it up.
"Hermione, you left your…" he started to say, but she was already gone. Ron looked at the object more carefully. It was long and skinny, kind of like a wand. It was red and made up of some unfamiliar material.
"Hermione, what's this?" asked Ron later that day.
"It's a pen," said Hermione. "Do you really not know what a pen is? This school is so old-fashioned sometimes."
"What does this pen do?" asked Ron.
"You write with it," replied Hermione. "Just like with a quill and ink, except there is ink already inside it so you don't need a bottle of ink beside you."
"Can I try?"
"Sure." Hermione started laughing. Replying to a glance from Ron, she said, "You're fascination with this pen is hilarious. It's such an ordinary thing to Muggles."
Ron tried writing with the pen. "I figured it out!" cried Ron. "This isn't hard at all!" Ron then used the pen to write all of his assignments. Using a different writing utensil strangely motiviated him to actually get work done. He didn't ask Hermiome for help once.
That weekend, Ron and his siblings went home to visit their parents. Ron brought the red pen.
"Look, it can write just like a quill!" Ron was showing it to his dad. "And the ink is red! And you don't need to dip it in ink every two seconds!"
"Muggles sure come up with innovative things," Arthur mused. "Just think, this was made completely without magic."
Later that week, a letter from Hogwarts arrived at the Burrow. And then a Howler arrived in the Great Hall for Ron.
"RON I GOT A LETTER TODAY SAYING YOU'RE FAILING ALL YOUR RECENT HOMEWORK ASSIGMENTS! I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN BY THIS, BUT I NEED TO SEE IMPROVEMENT! SOON!"
Ron looked sheepishly at Hermione. "Maybe I should start having you help me with homework again."
