Sorry this is a bit short. I'm not entirely sure if this'll continue or not, but if it does, it'll probably function as a prologue to some other idea I had. Enjoy :)


That Fateful Day


It all started the day we tried to bring Mom back. We had gathered all the elements of a human being – water, 35 liters; carbon, 20 kilograms; ammonia, 4 liters; lime, 1.5 kilograms; phosphorous, 800 grams; salt, 250 grams; saltpeter, 100 grams; sulfur, 80 grams; fluorine, 7.5; iron, 5, silicon, 3 grams, and trace amounts of 15 other elements – into the carefully drawn transmutation circle. Our blood went into the mixture, what we had thought was a fair price for a soul.

Al had his doubts, but we were already too committed to back out, too busy playing God. In our arrogance, we thought we could bring a human back to life.

That was the day when we lost everything, sacrificed to the concept we worshiped: equivalent exchange.

That was the day we first saw the Gate.

Teacher described it as Hell, but I saw the Truth in there, like it was being directly implanted into my brain. Everything was in there, about alchemy, the future, and how to achieve a complete human transmutation. I had been just so close...
