Disclaimer: I do not own the characters. AN: There are OCs, but they are just Alfred's parents. Just giving you a heads up, they are not major in the fic at all.
Prologue
Two hooded figures raced through the woods, jumped over rocks and fallen trees. They moved with speed that was beyond the grasp of mere humans. The forest was restless, feral snarls echoed through the air. These sounds belonged to not a wolf gone mad but to something far worst, a demon. A creature, the largest of the pack, jumped up onto a large bolder, and sniffed the air. They were sent out to find the deserters. The body was pitch black, forged from the unhappy thoughts and unfilled dreams of mankind; eyes as bright as the sun but the color of blood cut through the night air.
The leader raised its massive head and let out a gut wrenching howl. The hell-hounds were on the hunt for the traitors. The two running did not stop, they were almost there. Once they crossed the edge of the forest they were out of the realm of the Demons and could not be tracked so easily. Their legs were begging them to stop, but they couldn't. Not until they were safe. Through the tall evergreen trees there was a light, a light from a human village. Almost there. From behind they couple heard the dreadful snarls getting closer. 40 yards more. The smell of death and decay filled the air. 30 yard. The hell-hounds' eyes could be seen through the brush now. 20 yards. The sounds of the demons' panting filled their ears. 10 yards. They could feel the hot breath of the demons on them but dared not look. 5 yards. The hell-hounds began to snap their jaws at the deserters. He cried out as his cloak got caught, but he kept running. The force ripped the cloak, freeing himself and he took off like a bullet. His mate was nowhere to be seen. He prayed to whomever that she was safe.
Within a matter of seconds he crossed the border. The sounds of angry howls were a distant sound now. The escapee searched the surrounding area for his mate frantically, shouting her name and about 10 yards away from edge of the wood she emerged, collapsed on the ground; her body too tired to support her. He made his way to her and joined her on the ground.
"Is...Is he alright...?" asked the male, breathlessly. The other nodded, pulling her long hair away from her chest and revealing a small babe. The child squirmed in his mother's arms as his cover was taken from him; a tiny whine escaped his mouth. The baby twisted so that his growing horns dug into his mother's breast. The man looked up at his mate, smiling, full of love and sharp teeth. He pulled back his hood to wipe away the sweat. Two large black horns adorned the top of his head. His eyes, a deep rich blue, were bright in the night and stood out against his pale skin. His mate had similar features, but her horns were not as large and her eyes a lighter blue. They were demons, demons that escaped the devil himself.
"Good," breathed the male, "We can start over in the human world. Our son will never have to see that bastard world." His mate nodded, closing her tired eyes. "But may we rest here for a while? We have been running a long time and I do not think my legs can carry me right now."
The older demon nodded with a light chuckle, smiling again. "Yes, a rest would be lovely."
They were free from that evil.
