Anna never really liked the cold.
Sure, she loved playing in it, making snowmen and snowangels and having snowballl fights, but she also enjoyed the long summers and warm weather all the same.
Cold is suffocating and it's hard to stand, but her sister is the queen of cold so she will endure it and have fun and ice skate and listen to Olaf ramble on about summer. Kristoff will come with Sven and they'll ride around town in the new sled she got him and maybe they'll kiss and she'll be happy for Elsa and her magic.
But there are some days where the cold seeps into her bones, and she remembers the feeling of crystalizing into solid ice and loosing all warmth and feeling nothing at all but cold, and her last breath was warm but then it was gone.
On those days, she wraps her blankets around herself and refuses to leave her room, holding in every bit of warmth she has to get rid of that frozen feeling that makes her heart ache.
Elsa doesn't use her magic on those days, except to keep Olaf alive, and the townspeople never question it. That's the wonderful thing about a small nation, surprising as it is. The people of Arendel act so busily and with such vigor that it feels like a full city. They know each other, know each family and know the princesses and so they know when to get close and when to stay away.
Occasionally, the children of the nation will come in with gifts, small blankets and stuffed animals and with the children come the parents who will offer kind words that make her remember the reason she unfroze, that it was love that brought her back to life and warmth.
Kristoff will come and kiss her on the cheek with his warm lips and she loves him so much even as they take it slow cause she's almost afraid to trust men because the last time she did he left her alone and dying and cold. Olaf stays outside the room, unable to understand the reason why he scares her some days but remaining respectful. Sometimes he'll shout something funny from the other side of the door and she'll chuckle lightly.
Elsa will come into her room and hold her hand, and even though her sister makes nothing but snow and ice her hands are warm and soft. And Elsa's silence is a million apologies all at once and her grip on Elsa's hand is a quiet forgiveness.
When the day is over, and warmth fills her very being, she'll tiptoe into her sister's room and ask the age old question, and snow will blanket the streets and she'll be able to laugh and enjoy the winter weather with a smile.
But until then, she'll wrap the toys and extra blankets around herself, think of the silent apologies and the soft kisses, and hope the love of an entire nation will make the cold go away.
