Prologue
If you were to ask the average person about how they've spent their birthdays, they'd laugh, and recall one gigantic blur of happiness and smiles, presents and cake. They would tell you of parties with friends, or of days spent with family, marveling at the time spent and gone. They would sit and be merry, wondering at the miracle that is life.
If, however, you asked Dean Winchester, you would discover a very different story.
Oh, yes, Dean remembered them vividly. Memorable days, nothing but a shadow in his past. They stood out for what they were, another ruined celebration, marred by his father's obsession, the hunt.
Most of his birthdays had been somewhat bearable, although John had never made a big deal of any of them. Dean supposed that, eventually, after years had taken their toll, John had forgotten the existence of birthdays all together, or that they were meant to be honoured and rejoiced. He had probably forgotten the date of his own birth, having faked it on countless Ids.
So, every year, when January 24th would roll around, Dean would grit his teeth, and live through it. Just like everything else.
