This is a little angsty one-shot I thought of while watching "Something Borrowed". I know it's been done several times before, but this is my take on it.

Disclaimer: J.K. Rowling owns everything but the details in the plot.

Lily Potter. That just sounded so… wrong. Lily, his sweet darling Lily, marrying James bloody Potter. Severus stared at the wedding invitation with disbelief. How had things become like this? Why had he been such a bloody idiot, letting Lily get away from him. All because of his so-called "friends". All because of his status. It wasn't even because he was in Slytherin! Lily had remained friends with him through everything – until the incident. That day, when Potter and his bloody friends decided to be their awful selves. He really didn't mean it – and he told Lily that for weeks afterwards. It just sort of – slipped out. But it was that incident that lost him his companion, that reaction that lost him his best friend, that word that lost him his love. 'Incendio!' Severus yelled into the night. He watched the flames consume the parchment until it was but a tiny pile of black ashes. Ashes black as his soul, he thought as tears ran down his large nose. Ashes like their broken friendship. Ashes like his hope, struck down by a single piece of parchment. Because Lily Evans-Potter was gone like ashes in the wind, and she was never coming back.

A/N: How was it? Review please!
