Fourth Year
"Oi, Evans!" I shouted at her. She whirled around.
"What, Potter?" She spat, glaring at me. I grinned at her.
"Go out with me?"
Narrowing her eyes down to little slits, she slapped me right in the face. "NO means bloody NO, JAMES POTTER! I WILL NEVER GO OUT WITH YOU!" Storming out of the hall with her nose held high, she left me wallowing in bitter disappointment yet again. Sodding girl. I wished my ruddy brain hadn't chosen her to fall in love with. I knew that I should try to move on, but it was always her. Always Lily Evans, the girl of stone, that my heart would move to. I had spent countless nights in my dorm, drinking firewhisky, trying to drink her away. It had never worked. Lily was the one girl I loved.
Seventh Year
My heart had skipped about three beats. Lily, saying she wanted to be friends? I mean, sure, now that we were both Heads we would practically have to do everything together, but she didn't just say she wanted us to be civil, she said she wanted to be friends. I cleared my throat and prepared to answer her. Had I finally done something right? "Yeah! Of course we can be friends. Now that we're both Heads and all it would probably be best if we..." She silenced me with a glare.
"You get one chance at this, Potter, and only if you can act like a mature adult. Don't screw it up." A small smile slowly formed on her face, and I knew it would be okay. She had given me a chance; of course I wouldn't blow it.
"Okay, friend, how about I walk you to Transfiguration?" She rolled her eyes.
"In your dreams, Pott- I mean, James." Then she shoved me and took off running.
"Hey!" I started after her, but then I froze. James. She had called me James.
Seventh Year- Again
Lily was all there was, all there would ever be. She was life, and I loved her. I caught the scent of her hair as I buried my nose in it; she was curled up in my arms in our dorm. Tomorrow we would graduate. Tomorrow was the day I would do it, finally I would do it. I just had to make it until tomorrow.
First thing that morning, I rushed to Lily's room, pushed open the door, and flung myself headlong into her bed. I shook her shoulder. "Lily Lilykins! Lilylove darling! Lily flower!" She groaned.
"Urgh... don't tell me it's morning, I've only just gone to sleep..." I turned her face skywards and plopped kisses on her eyes, nose, then mouth.
"Love, can you tell me what day it is?"
"I dunno, Taco Tuesday?" I sighed dramatically.
"No. Today-" I poked her in the cheek-"Is graduation day." She sat up abruptly, eyes widening.
"Oh, Merlin's sodding underpants. Today is graduation day!" I nodded.
"C'mon, then, let's get ready. I'm gonna miss this place," Lily added.
"Me too."
Sometime in the very near future
"Wow, I can't believe that we're actually leaving. This is really it." My beautiful girlfriend nodded. "You know, people say that when one door closes, another opens. So..." I knelt on the ground before her, and pulled a velvet lined box out of my pocket. She gasped quietly. "Lily Evans, I love you, and I know you love me. You've always been it for me. I want to spend the rest of my life with you." I opened the box to reveal a golden ring with a single emerald in the center, green like her eyes. "Will you marry me?" Her eyes were shining, and she grinned at me.
"Yes."
