A/N Hey this is one of my few M*A*S*H stories so feel free to tell me it
sucks. By the way this is a short story this is the whole story.
Disclaimer: I do not own M*A*S*H, I never said or claimed to, I only wished and hoped to.
Suicide is Painless
_________ POV
The war is hell. It really is. Especially after a 72 hour session of meatball surgery. I peeked into the OR. Hawkeye was the only surgeon left there.
His face was crinkled with lines of determination. His blue eye shone with fear and anxiety. He was working on a very difficult chest wound.
"We're losing him doctor," said the nurse.
"Dammit" cursed Hawkeye as he pumped the kids chest.
"I've got no pulse doctor." Said the nurse.
Hawkeye called for a rib spreader and performed open-heart surgery on the kid.
"Live dammit live!" he yelled.
I walked in and tapped his shoulder, his gaze locked on me, pleading for help, although at that time I didn't know that.
"It's over" I said "I t was his time that's all.
That was the last time I saw him before early evening when I went to check supplies.
I found Hawkeye sitting on a crate. One hand poised over his mouth ready to drop something in his mouth. I realized he was holding pills.
"Don't take those!" I screeched, running to him and taking the pills from him.
"Why not?" he asked.
He wanted know why. It was then I confirmed my worst fear.
"Because I love you." I said looking into his eyes. Those darn blue eyes of his. I put all my trust in him. "Promise me you won't do this to yourself or to- me. Promise me."
He looked at me, hesitated, and then said, "I promise." He left the supply tent and I went to bed content he wouldn't break his promise.
Hawkeye's POV
Good, I thought everyone's asleep. I tiptoed across the swamp and toward the minefields. It was time.
_________ POV
I woke up to the crackling of the PA system. Then I heard Radar's worried voice. "Captain Benjamin Franklin Pierce is missing."
I leapt up. He had broken his promise I just knew it.
Within five minutes everyone was searching for him. I found him. His body was sprawled in a whole where the minefield used to be. Tears formed in my eyes as I dragged his body back to camp.
The End
***Epilogue*** It was time for my speech at Hawkeye's funeral. This is what I said, "Hawkeye was a kind, caring man. He had a great sense of humor and was passionate about his work." I paused looking around at the tear stained faces, I myself was crying. "That is what brought him to his death. I will not dwell on this; I'll just finish telling you what a great guy he was. He always knew what to say to me, was there when I needed a friend, and gone when I wanted to be alone. I loved Hawkeye we all did and now we salute him."
Everyone stood up and put their thumb on their nose and wiggled their fingers. There wasn't even a single laugh.
***End of Epilogue***
