Anne was wandering the streets of Kingsport late at night. She felt dazed, her ideal, Royal Gardner, had just proposed and she refused. She did, of course, have no regrets, and while she was pondering why, she came across an old stone boarding house. Anne knocked and the door was swiftly opened by a jolly looking old man. He seemed surprised to find the young lady at his doorstep, but he just grinned at her and asked;
"Now, what is a young girl like you doing here at this hour? Which of the boys are you here to see?"
"Gilbert." She answered solemnly.
"Ha-ha! Alright, I'll get him for you. Gilbert! A young woman is at the door for you!" The old man called inside the house.
Anne heard a group of boys laugh while one said, "Alright, I'll be right there."
Then Gilbert came to the door and exclaimed, "Anne, What on earth are you doing here?"
She answered, "I know it's probably too late and I know you're engaged to Christine, but I need to tell you that I love you and I always have. I've noticed that now. I wouldn't be able to live if you didn't know."
Gilbert silenced Anne's ramblings with a kiss on her incredibly soft lips. When he pulled away, Anne was shocked.
"Wha – wha - what? I – I thought y – you were engaged!" She stuttered.
Gilbert laughed and stated, "Christine is engaged to someone at home, and I never fell out of love with you." Anne caught her breath. Gilbert continued, "So, will you marry me?"
Then Anne drew him close and whispered, "Yes."
