"We Might As Well Be Strangers"

I don't know your face no more

"I haven't seen him in years," thought Misao.

Or feel the touch that I adore

"No more warm hugs, like when I was a little girl . . . "

I don't know your face no more

"Kami-sama, please don't let me forget the one I love."

It's just a place I'm looking for

"I'll find him . . . even if I have to travel all over Japan!"

We might as well be strangers in another town

It was so many years ago that Aoshi had left the Aoi-ya. And no one in Kyoto had heard from him or any of the other four oniwabanshu in forever. Would they ever come back?

We might as well be living in a different world

A different world. That's what he'd reasoned. It was a different world that he lived in, and she was too pure to have to live in it like he did. So Aoshi left Misao in Kyoto.

We might as well

It was for the best . . .

I don't know your thoughts these days

Even though thoughts ran through both of their minds about each other everyday, they wondered if the other was thinking about them. He left her because he loved her. But she thought he saw her as weak . . .

We're strangers in an empty space

It had been so long . . . would he even remember her?

I don't understand your heart

She had grown up. She was different. Not the child she had been.

It's easier to be apart

Soon it was all so clear. Nothing was the way it had been. They had both changed so much. And it broke his heart.

We might as well be strangers in another town

She was gone. Left to be with some wanderer and journey off into the frozen mountains of Hokkaido.

We might as well be living in another time

Was he living in the past? Was it time to move on?

We might as well be strangers

Aoshi no longer knew Misao . . .

For all I know of you now

He supposed it was judgement. Judgement for leaving her behind all those years ago.

For all I know

She was gone. Aoshi . . . no longer knew Misao.
