Myka sat on her bed at Leena's. She smiled to herself as she let her eyes wander among the familiar settings. It felt more like home than her parent's house had, and yet, something was missing. There was a quietness in her spirit that was no longer there. Something inside was pacing anxiously, waiting, for an unknown that she could not quite name.
"You asked me why I brought her to you," Mrs. F said, seemingly out of nowhere. She walked towards the window and casually glanced out into the night. Myka had a sneaking feeling that the older woman could see things in the darkness that others could not. "Did you find your answer?"
Myka looked openly at Mrs. F and shook her head slightly. There was a look of resolution in her eyes and though she hadn't realized the answer herself until now, the words flowed easily. "I don't know, anymore. I thought I needed answers, but when she was there- hearing what she needed to say – I just don't know."
Mrs. F nodded and spoke frankly. "You know, Myka- it takes an unusually brilliant mind to come up with concepts such as time travel years before its time." Myka smiled to herself and glanced down shyly. There was no doubt in anyone's mind that HG was brilliant beyond capacity. "But Myka, do not underestimate your part in things. It takes an equally great mind to have the patience and determination to keep up with the level of intensity and to understand the prices that must be paid for that gift.
Myka let the moment's silence linger as she processed the counsel Mrs. F was offering. She tried to work out where this new viewpoint fit with the feelings that hadn't stopped stirring inside her since HG's arrival into their world. "I care about her, very much," Myka whispered, not embarrassed, but the words felt in need of the reverence. Myka needed it. HG was special to her in a way that she hadn't understood until she had lost her. Wiping an errant tear from her face, she fought off the knowledge that it was too late to go back. It was too late to pretend things had never gone atrociously wrong.
"Families are like puzzles, Myka, they don't work right unless all the pieces are there.*" She sat down on the bed next to her and smiled knowingly. "Your friends here managed, but this team was not the same without you."
Myka grinned a little embarrassed. "It's good to be back, but really they were fine without me. They might have needed a little help looking after Pete," she said jokingly, "but they were fine."
"They managed, they got by, they survived, sort of like what you're doing now, is it not?" She looked pointedly at Myka and knew her words were finally sinking in. Grabbing her hand she smiled that secret smile she had when she was about to reveal something special. "You're home now Myka, you've put this puzzle back together. However, if something feels off, you may want to examine your own puzzle and count the pieces."
"It's not that simple," Myka started, looking away with flushed cheeks. She could feel the hope rattling inside her very bones, but was fearful to give it life just yet. HG was gone and she doubted her own need for the other woman, no matter how strong, would be enough to right the wrongs HG had been party to.
"It is exactly that simple Agent Bering," Mrs. F responded forcefully.
"I don't know where to start," she whispered brokenly, but when she looked up the other woman was already gone.
