Hopeless, or, An Ode to My Dog

Jareth stared down into sweet, adoring eyes and crooned, "Fear me…"

As if!

"Love me…"

I do! I love you desperately!

"Do as I say—"

I'll consider it. Sometimes.

"And I, I shall keep you forever…"

Yes! Tail wagging wildly, the rusty golden retriever wiggling at the Goblin King's feet melted into a puddle of canine euphoria as gloved hands rubbed the sweet spot inside her ear. She leaned heavily against his booted feet, her expressive eyebrows and silly dog-grin conveying her bliss while the rhythmic thwump-thwump-thwump of her cord-like, feathered tail delighted nearby Goblins.

"Jareth!"

His hands stilled as the Goblin Queen, leaning against the door frame, interrupted Fae and dog's marvelous interlude.

"You can't keep her, Jareth." Sarah tried to break the news gently to the happy couple, but Hope whined nonetheless while Jareth clutched the gorgeous golden beauty to him.

"But I love her!"

She's MINE!

"Seriously, Jareth, the author is getting pissed."

The Goblin King sulked for a moment before fetching the bag of treats from the top of the refrigerator. "Fine," he grumbled, "but I'll spoil her rotten first!"

Hope groaned as the two sovereigns (and their subjects) faded from sight before happily snacking at the whole bag of dog biscuits Jareth left on the floor. She couldn't blame the King for leaving; his lady was very pretty, with nice hands and an unobtrusive smell (unlike the boy who lived upstairs) and 'the author' would gladly have beaten the beloved Goblin King with a wooden spoon to retrieve her retriever. All in all, Hope thought smugly, it was good to be the dog.

Oro: Sorry, Quill, this one's entirely on my gorgeous golden Hope. (sings) "Well I'm her's, and she's mine"... and I forget the rest of the line... (stops singing) What? Everyone else got to do their take on The Words, why couldn't I?

Quill: She's right, I take no responsibility for this one.
