Ch. 1
The Once and Future King?
Merlin stood on the pavement and stared at the monument which marked the burial place of King Arthur of Camelot, wondering for the ten millionth time when his king would awaken and return to set the world straight. If ever Albion was in its greatest need surely it was now? The entire world was living in a near constant state of terror from extreme radicals- not unlike Morgana and her kind- if you're not with us, you're against us and we will destroy you. He sighed and shook his head sadly fearing he would have to wait another thousand years or more before seeing his friend again.
"Excuse me mister…" a high pitched, sort of whiney voice called from behind him. He tried to ignore it, it probably wasn't meant for him anyway.
"Excuse me…" it called again after a few seconds, "would you take our picture?"
The old man groaned as he turned to face the pretty young woman who was speaking to him. He stared for a second, there was something familiar about her but he couldn't quite place it. Yes she was attractive; not his type but the type that most men would be attracted to, blonde hair and blue eyes and what he mused were likely fake breasts. Ah, the wonders of the modern world never cease to amaze him.
"Oi! Anyone ever tell you it's rude to stare?" She huffed.
"Vivian, are we taking this picture or what?" a young man called from a few feet away; must be her boyfriend.
The young woman shoved something in his face, "Now just push this button here, and listen for the click." She ran over to where her boyfriend waited in front of the monument.
Merlin about had a heart attack when the boyfriend came over and gave him a friendly pat on the shoulder, "Thanks mate" and slipped a 1 lb. note in Merlin's pocket before walking away.
If he didn't know better he would swear that bloke was Arthur, the once and future king of Albion. "Naaahhhh" he shook his head, it was impossible, he was just some young kid who happened to look a bit like Arthur. Yeah he had the blue eyes and dark blonde hair, the same aristocratic nose that was just a tad too long; but Merlin hasn't left this monument in nearly a thousand years, there is no way he could have missed Arthur's return… could he.
"Naaahhhh" he scowled shaking his head and quickly forgot the young couple and how familiar they seemed to him. He made his way across the street to his flat which overlooked the monument, where he would continue to wait for the Once and Future King.
