"It doesn't hurt anymore"
That simple sentence made him confused. What doesn't hurt anymore? The Gun shot wound inflicted by Gallagher? Or some other injury that she had received that he didn't know about, maybe it was the broken heart that he inflicted?
She didn't say anymore, he'd bought her chocolate like she said when the Hammersly had pulled into port. They sat in the dark hospital room in silence; the only noise was from outside the window, thunder disrupting the ever so quiet city.
Had she forgiven him or not?
The dark rings around her eyes told him that she needed rest.
"I should go," he said as he stood up from the cold and stiff plastic chair.
She looked at him, her head tilted to the side a little. There was a smile forming across her delicate white skin.
"Okay." Her voice was barely above a whisper.
He turned to leave, hesitating when he reached the door that lead to the long dark corridor.
"What doesn't hurt anymore?" he didn't turn to face her, he couldn't bare the look in her eyes.
The silence fell upon the single room once again.
It felt like ages until someone spoke again. Hours, but merely seconds.
Mike turned to face her; Kate's head was lowered. Strands of her blonde hair falling on her face.
"Kate?" Mike's voice full of concern.
"What doesn't hurt anymore…your arm?"
"No" her voice no louder than it was minutes before.
"Then what?" he came closer to her, sitting on her bed.
"Well at least I didn't think it did, but thinking about it, it kind of still does."
"Kate what are you talking about?"
She looked up at him, her eyes filling with tears that were threatening to fall.
Mikes eyes were trying to search for something anything below the surface, but all he could see were the tears gathering.
"When I got posted on the Hammersley I thought that all the feelings were forgotten. Gone. Forever never to be return again. But as soon as I saw you and your beautiful eyes and dreamy smile, all the feelings came flooding back. I fell so hard the first time and the I promised myself I wouldn't, not again…"
"Kate-"
"And then we, well you met Ursula and I …"
"Kate, i'm sorry" he placed his hand on her cheek, wiping away the single tear that had fallen.
"I'm sorry, for, for, the first time. When I left. Breaking your heart was the last thing I ever wanted to do, you meant, mean so much to me."
"So you left with no explanation. You never returned my calls."
"Kate, Katie, I fell so hard for you. Like no one else ever before, but I knew you wouldn't stick around, your career meant so much to you and I didn't want to put your future in jeopardy."
The sun had fully set, and the clouds had covered the sky so there were no stars in the sky. The city lights were a picture all of there own.
Both Mike and Kate were now crying, unable to control themselves.
"Kate, I love you more than anything in the whole world"
Kate was crying so hard that her whole body was shaking, Mike pulled her closer to him, holding her in his arms pushing those few strands of her blonde hair behind her eats.
Kate buried her face into Mike's chest.
"I love you too, Please don't ever leave me again" her voice was muffled by his strong body.
"Never again."
