Impossible

Some things may be…or might have been…they could have been…but for others, it never really was.

Ω

She stomped around the apartment hastily grabbing what seem to be random objects.

"Mamma…where…go…?" her son had recently began to talk and so didn't have the hand of talking just yet

She held strong in resisting tears until her little boy walked over and held her dress. She could no longer hold in the tears, the pain, and the sorrow. She hugged her little boy and sobbed.

"Honey, were going out. Only this time we won't come back, ever. I'm sorry to do this, but one day you'll understand. But right now you're too young." She hugged him and then returned to her previous occupation

She left him staring at her confused and oblivious of everything. After another hour or so they have finally collected their things and it was when she was zipping up the chubby little boy's coat when someone outside jingled their keys to the lock. The woman stood up and braced herself for the man coming in. His legs wobbled but he caught the door and sluggishly looked at the duo standing in front of him. He looked into the young boy's eyes and immediately straightened up.

"Hey there kiddo!" He reached for him when Reuben hid behind his mother

"Aww, you scared of daddy's scruffy beard? C'mere you!" but the woman moved in front

"He is no longer your son!"

He looked at her and smiled, "Oh, I hardly noticed you there, Fayth. My, you're lovely today."

Her face scrunched up, "It's not like you've ever been around to notice anything! You're always out 'working' but look at you! You're a total mess!"

"C'mon…don't be like this. Why are you so uptight?" he chucked reaching for her face

Before she was able to blink she retracted from the blow and fell on the table. Reuben ran over and hugged his mother.

"Mamma! Mamma!" he cried

The drunken man reached for Reuben but he ran to the other side of his mum. She regained consciousness and grabbed her son, "…I've spent seven years of my life taking all of this from you. This slap doesn't hurt me anymore…" she slowly got up and held her son like a precious treasure, "but you will never hurt him."

The man just chuckled, "You don't have anywhere to go."

"Anywhere would be far better than remaining here with you." She picked up Reuben and their luggage and walked out the door to an awaiting taxi driver

The more she walked the more he began to worry; maybe…just maybe, she was serious this time.

"W-wait…wait! Please don't go!" he ran after her

Her pace hurried down the pathway until she reached the taxi when he grabbed her wrist.

"Ow! Unhand me!" she tried freeing her wrist but he held on tight

"Please…it took me so long to find…please, I don't want to lose you." He begged "Remember our promises?"

The corners of her lip twitched ever so slightly.

"How could I forget? But do you remember it? Of course not! I'm sick and tired of your habits. You told me you'd change, but it's gotten worse!"

Tears welled up in her eyes but she shook them away.

She put Reuben inside the taxi along with the luggage.

"Please; just give me one more chance! That's all I ask! Please, don't leave me alone!" he grabbed her waist and buried his face in the crook of her neck.

He knew. She knew. They both knew, even though they're going through with the divorce…they couldn't separate from this. This moment. This feeling. This. Them. He wouldn't let go. She wouldn't leave. You couldn't separate a soul, and nor could they…

But she did it, she moved away. You can say she's changed, she's possessed. Whatever happened, she no longer was the person she wanted to be or the person he remembered her as.

"You were right all along…you can't lose something you've never really had. I'm sorry, but this is goodbye."

Just like that. She got into the cab with her son and drove off…out of his life. Forever.
