Kaneki reached for his cup of coffee with slight loneliness. Everyone is safe... he thought.
Little did he know, none of his friends were safe.
There was a soft knock at Kaneki's door.
"Kaneki..." Ayato said, entering the room with a look of pure concern in his eyes.. "I think there's something you need to see..." Ayato handed Kaneki a smartphone. "It's a news report from this evening."
Kaneki played the video, confused as to why the news report had anything to do with him.
"This evening a café called Anteiku in the 20th ward was taken over by ghoul investigators." the news castor said. "It turns out that the coffee shop was owned and run by ghouls. Several humans were also killed in the attack, including a employee of the CCG, Hideyoshi Nagachika..."
Kaneki's eyes widened. But... I was protecting them... he thought. I had this all under my control...
"I wasn't expecting this either, Kaneki..." Ayato said with tears in his eyes. "I never thought..." Ayato walked out of Kaneki's room, looking at the ground.
Kaneki hadn't felt this way in a while, not since his hair had turned white. He was overcome with sudden emotion. Anger, loneliness, sadness, despair. He sat on his bed, and he cried. Oh, how he cried. This can't be... he thought. And Hide... Hide!
"Is something wrong, Kaneki?" said a voice just outside of Kaneki's door.
"Er, Eto? Is that you?" Kaneki muttered with a snuffle. "Please, come and sit."
"You aren't the only one who lost family in that raid, you know." she said, sitting down next to Kaneki. "Ayato and I... We lost family too. Ayato lost a sister, whom he loved very much, though he'd hate to admit it. And I... I lost a father. I've never forgiven my father for what he did to me... Not even in death. But that doesn't mean I didn't love him... He was my father, after all."
"I had no idea you loved your father so much..." Kaneki said, turning toward her.
"Well, I don't think one can ever really stop loving one's parents..." she said, looking at her feet. "I understand you lost a best friend in that raid... I hear he was like a brother to you..."
"Yes... I did." he said, turning his head away from her. "Hide was my best friend... My only friend. In ways, yes, he was like a brother to me."
"I've never had anyone that close..." said Eto. "Now that I think of it, I don't really have any real friends... Just body guards and solders." She smiled and turned to look at Kaneki. "Maybe we could be friends...?"
"Uh... Sure." Kaneki said. He shook her hand and shrugged.
"Maybe Ayato will be my friend too!" Eto said, getting up and leaving the room. "See ya later, new friend." She winked and walked away.
How strange... Kaneki thought, getting up from where he sat. Eto's never tried to befriend me before... I guess it was nice of her to try and cheer me up...
