Poor Kimahri, they say. Poor Kimahri.

Poor Kimahri has no horn.
--x---x---x---x---x--
Kimahri remembers a night (a very long time ago, when he had first lost his horn) when he had woke up to hushed voices and a dim lantern.
Neerid must be quiet, or Kimahri will waken!
He had sat up then, and squinted at what he made out to be Neerid and Alikh, two Ronso younglings. They had taken sharp breaths, had hastily shuffled objects from view.
What are Neerid and Alikh doing to Kimahri while Kimahri sleeps?
There were incoherent mumbles, half-apologies, shifty eyes darting about like trout in the southern stream.
What is behind Neerid and Alikh's backs? he had asked, and they had hesitantly shown him a stone carved in the shape of a horn, and sticky paste.
We wanted to help Kimahri. We wanted to give Kimahri a horn.

Poor Kimahri is so small. Little Kimahri!

Kimahri doesn't cry when he learns of his brother's deaths. Kimahri doesn't cry or scream or fall dramatically to his knees, although those options are all very appealing. Kimahri was never a very melodramatic guy, and he's not about to start now, not when Biran and Yenke's words are repeating themselves in his head (little Kimahri!) and now they're dead and he must prove he's not little Kimahri (puny Kimahri!) or puny Kimahri (pathetic Kimahri!) or pathetic Kimahri. He's strong Kimahri, strong and determined and brave Kimahri, so he must live, to prove his dead family wrong.

Poor Kimahri. He is banished. Kimahri has nothing but his summoner, but Kimahri's summoner will soon be gone, too!

Kimahri watches as Yuna slowly walks to the Cloister of Trials of Besaid Island, upupup the steps and she is walking so slowly. Walking, walking, don't look back now, you're almost there.
Kimahri wants to tell Yuna to hurry, to go, because she is walking so slowly and Kimahri feels he will burst if she doesn't quit walking so s l o w l y.
He doesn't, because he may look the part of a beast but (don't be judgmental). Besides, he can wait, he can wait for Yuna to take her time (please hurry, Yuna) because she is all he has now, all that's left to Kimahri, and that is why Kimahri decided to be her guardian when she decided to be a summoner.
It is now that he realizes he is to follow Yuna, follow her up the steps (she is walking so slowly), and he does so, being sure to walk just as slowly as she.
Yuna will become a summoner soon, Yuna will save the world soon, Yuna will be gone soon.
So Kimahri can wait.
