Swimming
"Teo!" the Duke said excitedly, yanking on the older boy's hand. "Come swim!"
"I don't know, Duke-"
"It's the Duke!"
Teo grinned and ruffled the little Freedom Fighter's wet hair.
"I don't know, the Duke," he corrected himself. "I don't think swimming's really my thing."
"Haru!" the Duke whined, splashing back into the indoor lake. "Teo doesn't want to swim!"
"Wimping out?" Toph asked, swimming over to the edge of the pool and crossing her arms smugly. "How many chances are you going to get to swim in a sacred airbender temple pool? And Haru was just telling me you're such a brave explorer!"
"He is!" the Duke said, nodding vigorously. "He's our exploring leader! Like Jet! Except not really like Jet," he added after a moment of thought.
"Well, I herby revoke Teo's right to be the leader," Toph decided. "I'm taking his place."
"Hey!" Teo protested.
"And my first order of business as exploring leader is… Teo has to come in, too!"
"Wait, I can't-" Teo was cut off as Toph smashed her fist into the stone surrounding the pool of water. A pillar of earth burst upwards beneath Teo's chair, sending him flying.
He splashed into the water head first. Suddenly, everything was rushing bubbles and currents that sent him tumbling. He thrashed his arms frantically but couldn't tell up from down. And then he was sucking burning water into his lungs, and everything was dark and fuzzy and long-buried memories were jostling for attention in his frantic mind. Rushing water and screams and pain pain pain. The ghost of a lifeless figure being torn away from him by the powerful flood. He tried to reach for his mother, but his father's strong hands had wrapped around him, were holding him tight and safe, and the salt of tears mixed with blood and rushing water…
Teo's head finally broke through to the surface. He coughed up mouthful of water and tried to gulp down air at the same time. There were hands dragging him towards the edge of the lake, smaller and softer than his father's so many years ago, but just as strong.
He continued to cough up water as he felt someone taking off his soaked vest and loosening the collar of his shirt. He finally caught his breath enough to focus on the three people leaning over him. Haru and the Duke hovered, looking worried. Toph, though, looked perfectly happy, grinning with her wet bangs falling across her pale eyes.
Teo opened his mouth to speak, but before he could force words out of his raw throat, Toph leaned down and pressed her lips firmly against his.
"Wha-?" Teo croaked when she pulled away.
She shrugged.
"Hey, I taught myself to swim after someone kissed me," she explained, still grinning.
If you get what Toph is referring to at the end there, you're awesome.
