Alex Rider was dead.
That was the simple truth.
Rumours had spiralled around the school for the past two years about his involvement with drugs, and gangs, stints in prison, and abusive housekeepers, but there had been no comment about his death, no conspiracy theories, no gossip.
Eighteen students and one teacher had witnessed what had transpired that day. But they didn't question why; why a sniper had decided one overcast Thursday morning that he would set up on the roof opposite that particular class's home room, why out of every student, they had chosen only the clever but frequently absent Alex, or why when he had looked down at his blood soaked shirt he hadn't seemed shocked at all.
They didn't question why, they didn't dare.
Nineteen people had put pen to paper, on the Official Secrets Act, under the watchful eye of a woman called Mrs Jones, and it was announced to the school the next day, that Alex Rider had died as a result of a congenital heart defect.
