PROLOGUE.

He meets her at a society gala, when she is on the arm of another man – his very own older brother, of course – and he is in the habit of wanting things he cannot have.

This is his father's fault, he thinks faintly, but in all honesty he's just looking for someone to blame.

The gala is thrown for Uchiha Corporation's CEO Uchiha Fugaku in celebration of all the good he has done for Konoha. Or some shit like that, Sasuke snorts to himself. God knows he wouldn't even be here if his father hadn't advised (read: forced) him into coming. Over family dinner, he had spouted some bullshit about the importance of family, and how it would mean so very much to him if both of his sons were in attendance.

Uchiha Fugaku is all about appearances, but it's just as well – Sasuke is an expert at pretending.

He plays the part of the perfect younger son, politely making his way around the room to mingle with his father's partners and investors. "Look around, son," they say with crinkled eyes and greying hair, offering up their drinks to him, "this'll be you someday." Sasuke only smiles thinly in response, suppressing the flares of disgust and mild hatred at the insinuation that he would be anything like his father in time.

He just wants to exist in a world where no one expects anything from him.

There is an exaggerated cough from his side, bringing him out of his thoughts. The woman on his arm is nothing to him, really, just a pretty face looking for some publicity, and he indulges her until he is tired of her. He's irritated and he's not in the mood to entertain anyone, but he is never outright rude – so he asks, "Would you like a drink?" instead of telling her to get lost.

She replies, "Sure," but she barely has any time to get the word out before he leaves for the open bar.

That's when she catches his eye.

The first thing he notices is how fucking radiant she is. She's absolutely glowing in a short deep plum dress – very professional, not too modest or too provocative – and killer black pumps, looking quite happy on his brother's arm as they entertain businessmen and politicians alike. Judging from the way they all seem taken by her, he assumes (rather correctly) that she's charming, lovely, and knowledgeable, just the type of girl his father would approve of, and when her bright apple-green eyes catch his he knows. But whereas any other girl would give him bedroom eyes and a lip bite, she sends him a shy, pink-lipped smile.

He wants her. He has to have her. He is young and self-destructive, looking for ways to set himself on fire because no one ever listens to you unless you're going up in flames – so with a glass of Dom in his hand, he approaches them.

This is how it starts.
