A/N: Alright, this came to my mind last night as I watched this episode. And since I've started writing again, ta-da! A little one-shot was born.
Please keep in mind that this is my first story in AGES, so it's probably not the best. I was super nervous about posting this too.
I love getting reviews on my writing, it only helps me get better. So please let me know what you thought of it! Thank you :)
As the landmine exploded, Jules felt her heart explode inside her chest along with it.
No. Not Lou.
After that moment, everything around her seemed to happen in slow motion. She watched Spike open his mouth in a silent scream, his back to the explosion, and then collapse to the ground, completely overwhelmed with the grief of losing his best friend. She watched Sam walk away, ripping off his gloves, one at a time. The frustration about not being able to save Lou was visible in every step he took away from the trucks. She watched the emotion flood over Wordy's face as he stood in total shock, rooted to the ground next to her. She watched Greg stagger over and hold onto Spike, who was still collapsed on the ground, screaming in pain and loss. She watched Ed look in devastation at the dust and debris beginning to settle by Lou's body and pillar, as if he couldn't accept the fact Lou was gone.
Lou's body. It sounded so wrong to say that. He shouldn't be dead. He shouldn't be. It wasn't fair.
And the only thing she could do as she watched the scene unfold in front of her was put her face in her hands and sob.
He didn't deserve to die. If only they had gotten to Sarah earlier, and found out about the hidden landmines. The whole situation could have ended differently. They could've known about the landmines. They all could've gone home today. Instead, the team had a giant hole in their ranks, and they'd be bringing back a body.
The realization of it all was hitting her like a freight train. And the tears kept flowing down her face, a never-ending river of pain. Feeling unsteady, she grabbed the person closest to her – Wordy. All she could do was hold on to him. And maybe, just maybe, his embrace could keep her world from crashing around her feet. The team's world had been shattered in the instant Lou stepped off the landmine.
It would never again be the same.
