Disclaimer: Nope, Not mine.
It wasn't fair, it wasn't just and it most definitely was not funny! Just because he had called a squirrel a chipmunk by accident didn't give the others a right to laugh him out of the room. It just wasn't fair! They had all slipped up in negotiations more times than Ed could count. Did he go laughing all of them out of the room? No! You know why? Because it wouldn't be fair! It wouldn't be "just"! The "Just" King had to try to live up to his name. The others didn't have to be fair and even-handed however, and frequently reminded him that they had no problem being slightly cruel in their teasing.
Just last week Peter had stuck his foot in his mouth and said something completely stupid. Did Ed remember what he had said? No! Because it wouldn't be fair, it wouldn't be "just" to hold it against him! The other day Susan had accidentally broken an ancient Narnian custom (drinking wine out of your neighbors glass at midnight) that she hadn't been aware of. Did Edmund hold it against her? No! Because it wouldn't be fair, it wouldn't be "just"! Nobody had informed her of that rule so their etiquette instructor had pulled her to the side quietly and informed her of it. Lucy hadn't offended anybody yet, but she could get away with a lot more than they could, because she was so young. It could be passed off as youthful ignorance and quickly forgiven; that was another thing that bothered Edmund; age. Peter got to be High King because he was the oldest brother. Susan got to be popular amongst the subjects because she was the oldest sister. Lucy got to get away with mischief because she was the youngest. However, Edmund didn't get to make the major decisions, or get random gifts from adoring subjects, or even get to slide down long banisters like Lucy. He was held to as high a standard as Peter, but without all the perks. It really wasn't fair.
But then, life wasn't fair and that was why Narnia needed a "Just" King, to make things a little more evenhanded, even if he himself wasn't exactly being treated fairly. Edmund narrowed his eyes and set his jaw, walking back into the throne room where court was being held. He set his most understanding expression on his face and ignored the looks his siblings were giving him. He turned all his attention to the squirrel that was complaining about not having enough nuts for the oncoming winter. "I'm sorry for my mistake, my good squirrel, I must apologize for my distractedness." Apologies were not things that he liked to dole out but it was due here and if it helped the little animal feel better he would say it.
The thing was settled to everybody's happiness when Edmund suggested that the squirrel work away the winter inside the castle as a courier and in turn the Cair would provide him with his own rooms and plenty of food.
When Edmund Pevensie had entered Narnia he had been an envious little boy who wanted to be better than his brother. Now, as Edmund sat on a throne of marble in a great hall with a glass roof, he was much more, he was a beacon of hope to all who needed justice
He was King Edmund the Just.
