Sam snuggled closer into Daniel's strong arms and found peace in her friend's calming presence. She could tell he was still awake by the way he shifted his weight on the comfy mattress from time to time, without doubt still thinking about their experiences on Tegalus which had cost too many people their lives.
Neither of them spoke, but they didn't have to. Just being there for each other, huddled together in Daniel's big, cozy bed was enough comfort for them.
After a long time, Sam raised her head from Daniel's chest where it had rested for the past few hours, and looked up into her friend's eyes which were as clear and blue as if daylight and not semi-darkness were surrounding them. But before Sam could voice her thoughts, Daniel suddenly spoke up.
"Have you ever thought of…?"
"Yes," she quietly answered, not waiting for her friend to finish his question.
His stark gaze rested on her, but Sam didn't feel threatened, just honored by the scrutiny with which he studied her face in the gloom.
"Why have you never…?"
Once again, she cut him off.
"… tried to seduce you, you mean?"
"Yes."
His features still remained calm, but this time there was curiosity peeking out behind the quiet expression on his face.
"Because I love you too much…."
He just stared at her, confusion obvious by the way his expressive eyebrows rose.
"… as a brother," Sam finished.
Daniel smiled his beautiful smile, planted a kiss on her forehead and gently drew her closer.
"I'm glad to hear that."
And with a sigh, the two of them relaxed again.
A few minutes later, both friends were fast asleep, holding each other tight in a protective embrace, keeping demons and nightmares at bay for one another.
