Chapter 1

(Louisiana)

Melanie Dubois sat on the porch of her family's plantation house sipping her ice tea. She was a southern belle in every sense of the word. Her closet was full of dresses, skirts, and blouses. Each outfit was perfectly coordinated with matching accessories, and shoes. She had a private library filled with classic literature, a thick, leather bound Bible, and a handful of prayer books. If one was to look at Ms. Dubois; they would say she had had been born in the wrong time period. She was far better suited for life in the 1800s, rather than the contemporary 70s. She didn't like the disco music, nor the bell bottom pants. She did embrace aspects of the flower girl look. However, she much preferred the fashions of yore. So here she was, a living ghost of southern women past. She was the modern example of what stories like "Gone With The Wind" have tried to resurrect for those unfamiliar with such a time.

After finishing her drink, Melanie rose from her chair and went inside her house. The Dubois Plantation was the crown jewel of the local Parish. Since 1797, the Dubois family had called this place their home. The house had seen weddings, funerals, life, and death. It had survived wars and diseases. Indeed, Melanie knew every story behind every fiber, crack, and paint flake the house had. She even knew every skeleton in every closet. This house was her world. And with the tragic death of her parents at such a tender age of 19; she was the only one keeping the house occupied and functional. However, she could not do that with the help of her dear nanny, Miss Abigail. Miss Abigail was like a real life version of the lovable Mammie. She had been working and living with the Dubois family before the Civil Rights Movement. She also had a hand in raising Melanie. She also was the only one to dry Melanie's tears, as the police told her about the accident that made her an adult orphan.

"Melanie, are you in the house child?" Came Miss Abigail's voice.

"Yes. I'm coming Miss Abigail." She said.

Melanie hurried to help her nanny bring in the groceries. As they unpacked and stored the items; they talked about Melanie's up coming plans.

"So have you decided about going to see your cousin out in Oregon?" Asked Miss Abigail.

"I suppose so. I just hate the thought of you being all alone while I'm away." Replied Melanie.

"Now don't you be all worried over me. I think the change of scenery will do my lamb some good. Especially since you just buried Mr. and Mrs. Dubois only four months ago."

"You are very kind to me Miss Abigail. I don't know what I'll do without you all those days."

"You just do nothing that ain't fitting for a young belle like yourself honey." Miss Abigail warned, with a wink and smile.

Melanie chuckled. Miss Abigail made her signature chicken gumbo that night for supper. The next day, Melanie packed her bags; and was soon on the road to Oregon to visit her cousin, Rhett. He was a tall, dashing young man engaged to girl he met at his office job in Portland. She had seen them at her parents' funeral. They were due to marry later that year. She was going up to help plan the wedding.

(Texas)

Melanie had been driving for hours. She was driving through a small town in Travis county, Texas. She then noticed her car was running low on gas. She pulled into Hewitt's gas station, diner, and general store. She had just filled up her car; when she felt hungry. Melanie parked the car, and entered the store.

"Hello? Is anyone here?" She asked.

An old woman soon appeared from the back.

"Well good afternoon to you young lady." Said the old woman.

"I filled up regular gas. And I would like one roast beef sandwich, fries and a coke please." Melanie replied.

"I will let the cook know. My name is Luda May Hewitt. But you can call me Mama."

"Nice to meet you. I'm Melanie Dubois. How much do I owe?"

"You eat and relax. We can settle up after. Where you heading? Not everyday we get travelers."

"Oregon. To see my family."

"God bless and guide your journey."

Melanie thanked the old woman. The cook then shouted the food was ready. Luda served Melanie her food and drink. Suddenly, a man bursted our from the back. He wore a leather mask and wielded a chainsaw. Melanie was very afraid. The rumors of the 'Chainsaw Family' were true. Melanie was frozen with pure terror.

"You see, I know your kind. Nothing but cruelty for my poor boy." Said Luda darkly.

Leather Face moaned with sadness. He remembered the bullies and beatings. The horrible people of Blair Elementary had been so evil to him. Melanie was surely like every other pretty girl from school. She looked like a horrible person who hated him. With that he threw his chainsaw down and lunged for her.

Make them pay. Make them all pay. They hurt me. Now I will hurt them. He thought.

"No! Please stop! I won't hurt you!" Melanie cried out.

To her luck, her words gave Leather Face pause. Melanie then slowly pushed her plate of half eaten lunch toward him.

"D-Do you want the rest? I'm plenty full."

Leather Face was stunned; as well as his mother. No one had ever once offered to share lunch with him. Keeping an eye on Melanie, Leather Face sat beside her and ate. Melanie cleared her throat.

"I am Melanie Dubois. What is your name?" She said.

Leather Face swallowed the rest of his meal.

"Thomas Hewitt, at your service mam." He replied.

Melanie was shocked. He had a deep voice, with an obvious Texas drawl. Melanie offered her best smile.

"Well now Tommy. I'd like to be your friend." She said offering her hand.

Luda May's cold stare softened. This girl was special. She could tell.

Thomas took Melanie's dainty hand and kissed it.

"My, you certainly know how to treat a lady right." Melanie said.

"Of course he does! He is a gentleman! Like all real men are!" Came a masculine voice.

Melanie and the others turned to see the cook come out from the kitchen. He wiped his hands in his apron.

"Howdy. I'm Drayton." He then said.

"Melanie."

Drayton then looked over at Thomas, who was enthralled with how pretty Melanie looked.

"You did a kind thing for my baby brother Miss."

"Indeed. Unfortunately we can't let you walk out of here. Now that you know about us." Said Luda.

Melanie then felt her fear return full force.

"Oh no! Please don't hurt me Mrs. Hewitt! I won't tell anyone!" Melanie begged.

"Now now, don't make this harder than it has to be." Luda replied.

"Please! Let me live! I will stay with Tommy! I will stay and be his best friend! I will marry him!"

Again, her words stunned the Hewitts into a pause. This girl was not serious, right? Luda then broke the silence.

"Young lady, if I was you; I'd be very careful about I would say. You can get into plenty of trouble saying things you don't mean." She warned.

"No Mrs. Hewitt. I mean it. I promise I will marry Thomas. I will stay and become part of the family. Just please let me live." Melanie said.

Luda May thought to herself. Then, a twisted smile appeared on her face.

"Welcome to the family." She said.
