Getting Home

Jack staggered against Daniel's weight and nearly bought both of them
crashing down. Tight lines of pain on his friends face told a grim
story… Daniel had run out of kryptonite and was surviving on the fumes
of long ago spent energy.

A pool of blood spread from a wound on his left side and had soaked
clean through Jack's hastily applied field dressing, leaving a
tell-tail trail for their enemy to track them with.

What had started out as a pleasurable trip to an unexplored planet had
quickly gone south. Temples to be explored, samples to be taken, SG-1
was in their element until night fell.

Natives came rushing from all directions, overrunning Jack's perimeter
and heading for his team, their shrill cries as haunting as their
ghoulish appearance. Like creatures from a horror movie they moved
awkwardly but efficiently, making light work of tents and camping gear
and even lighter work of Daniel.

He never stood a chance really. Asleep in his tent, and closest when
they attacked, he had no warning. Jack got off a few rounds with his
Beretta before stumbling to Daniel's aid, while Teal'c and Sam circled
north and south picking off targets with well aimed staff and zat fire.

It was nuts really. No warning and no reason for attacking.
Eventually their primitive fighting skills, and fear of Sam and
Teal'c's weapons, had them ducking for cover and running off. Damage
was done though and Daniel was paying dearly.

Pale and sweating, Daniel lay curled up clutching his injured side
blood pouring freely through his fingers. Jack eased him onto his
back and quickly applied a field dressing to his wound. "Carter, go
for help," he yelled pressing down harder and ignoring Daniel's pained
cries. "Teal'c, back her up."

"What if they should return, O'Neill?"

"We'll be right behind you." Jack patted Daniel's shoulder with his
free hand. "Won't we, buddy."

Daniel nodded but didn't speak, and Jack was sure he was focusing his
attention on just staying awake. "Let's get you fixed up and outta here."

So here they were. Carter was up ahead and making good time. Teal'c
had Jack and Daniel's six, and Jack was attempting to keep Daniel on
his feet.

"You're heavy, ya know that?"

Daniel dragged in a ragged breath and winced. "Elephant?"

"Hey? No, not quite that heavy… close though."

"Nearly there?"

"Yep," Jack tightened his grip on Daniel and muttered a silent "sorry"
for any pain he was causing his friend, "Carter should be there now
and firing it up. We'll have you with Doc in no time. Think you
can't make it?"

"Made it this far."

"Atta boy."
