It had started out as a quiet morning for both Joan and Sherlock. Sadly, it was not fated to continue that way. In fact as it turned out it was to be one of the most difficult days that the pair will ever have since the start of their partnership.
The trouble had began with the most innocent of things; a text message.
"Have arrived at JFK will be at the brownstone within the hour."
M. Holmes.
Seeing this made the younger Holmes want to throw his phone at the wall. Luckily, just as he was about to put his plan into action Joan walked into the living room and asked:
"Sherlock, just what do you think you are doing?" She snatched the phone from the detective's hand.
"Well?" She demanded.
Sherlock scowled. The way he looked, reminded Joan of a little boy pouting at the fact that his favorite toy had been taken away. Sometimes Joan felt more like a mother to Sherlock than a friend. She did not however, expect today to be one of those days.
"Is not obvious, Watson? I want nothing to do with my father!" Sherlock took a deep breath and let it go in one big rush. "The man has never kept his word, not once, in his entire life. So why should he start now, hmm?"
Joan sighed. "Maybe with what happened between you and Mycroft made your father realize that nothing lasts forever and that it's in his best interest, as well as yours, to make amends while you can."
Sherlock stared at Joan, all the while considering all that she had said to him in the past hour or so. Finally and with a slight shrug of his shoulders, he asked: "It comes down to that old law of Newton's doesn't it Watson?"
For one moment Joan was confused. "What old law are you talking about Sherlock?"
Sherlock smirked. "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." He blinked as a certain thought occurred to him.
"You knew this would happen?" He asked in disbelief.
Joan shrugged. "Not necessarily, but given what's happened in the last few days, I suspected that your father would make an appearance sooner, rather than later."
"I suspect that the only reason he is coming here, is just to save face with his precious business partners." Sherlock frowned. "After all Watson, how can a man be trusted to run a million dollar company if he cannot be trusted to handle his own sons?"
Joan walked over to Sherlock, took his hands in her own and gave them a gentle squeeze.
"Listen to me, Sherlock Holmes. You are no longer a child and despite all that's happened to you, in my eyes you are one of the bravest men I've ever had the good fortune to meet. And I would gladly toss anyone including your father into the Hudson if they said otherwise.
Sherlock looked into Joan's dark brown eyes and knew that every word she had said was the truth.
He took Joan into his arms and whispered.
"Thank you, Watson. Thank you."
FIN.
