"Today yet another 20 criminals were found dead, all of heart attacks. It is strongly suspected that Kira is behind the attacks. Police worldwide are still searching worldwide for the murderer with no success as yet. There has been no word from detective mastermind L on the subject..."
High school student Kenichi Kiyo sighed and turned off the television. More deaths. This was all wrong... No one deserved to die. Not even criminals. He swept his blonde hair out of his sparkling green eyes and stood up, thinking vaguely of going to walk around the park. And with that thought he left, slamming the door to his apartment behind him.
It was cold outside, and Kenichi shivered, having left his coat behind. People stood on the streets, looking nervous. He supposed they were, like him, scared of what Kira was capable of. People had even stopped littering incase they were killed for it. The air buzzed with fear and anxiety. It made the hairs on the back of Kenichi's neck prickle.
He collapsed on a nearby bench, and watched his breath rise in clouds before him. He felt his foot touch something. A notebook. How strange. He picked it up. It felt oddly warm in his hands, as though it had been lying in the sun for a while, but it couldn't have been. The front cover was emblazoned with the words 'Life Note', written in strange handwriting. The notebook fell open in Kenichi's lap. He read the first sentence:
The human whose name is written in this note shall be resurrected.
Kenichi's eyes widened. Resurrected...? Perhaps it was some sort of joke. That was probably it. But all the same... What if it really worked...? There was only one thing for it.
--
Kenichi arrived home in a hurry, slamming the door once again, and turned the television back on. The newsreader was now listing the names of people killed by Kira. Kenichi looked again at the inside cover of the notebook.
The notebook shall take effect within 40 seconds of the name being written.
He grabbed a pen and wrote:
Lind L. Tailor
He sat, watching the screen intently. His heart pounded so hard he could hear in his hears – feel his blood pulsing in every part of his body. 29 seconds gone... 28... What if nothing happened? How stupid would he feel? 35... 36... This was silly, nothing was going to happen... 39... 40!
Nothing happened. The newsreader was still reading of a list of names. Shame crawled through ever inch of him – how could he think that he was powerful enough to change the world? To resurrect the dead? But then-
"We are receiving news that there has been a disturbance after one Lind L. Tailor was sighted in the town centre. The man was confirmed dead 6 years ago as one of the first victims of Kira and was buried in a local graveyard. Local authorities are as yet unable to confirm the sighting or to explain his appearance..."
Kenichi gasped. Impossible... The notebook actually worked?! He stared down at it, awe-struck. He had the power... He alone could save Kira's victims. It was the heaven-sent solution he had been waiting for. With this... he could end Kira's reign. He could become a God of a New World.
