At first, she simply thought it was a phase, something he would grow out of but needed to experience. Everyone goes through things like this, she knew she should just let him do what he wanted for now. They were friends, so if he was happy, she was happy too, right? Besides, her mom had told her that phases only lasted for a maximum of three or so weeks. She could wait that long; she would wait that long for him.
When it lasted longer than any phase should last, she assumed he was trying to fit in with the 'cool crowd.' It would only be temporary, for he knew where he really belonged, which was with her, of course. She had to admit to wanting to be cool once, so who was she to tell him that he couldn't try it? If he was happy, so was she. She could ignore her heart until he was back to normal.
Lastly, when Layne Abeley ran into Dempsey Solomon and Massie Block on their movie date, she finally realized that he had done everything for her. He had changed his hair, his clothing, his interests, his hobbies, and well, his everything. Her best friend had completely abandoned her just to impress Massie. Hadn't she experienced this with Claire already?
Massie Block would never in a million years borrow clothing from Layne Abeley, but she had no problem borrowing her friends…and never giving them back.
For the first time since she'd known Dempsey, she wasn't happy when he was.
