The Day Before You
Song by: Rascal Flatts

Sunlight peeped warily through a small slit in the curtains covering the window of a certain bedroom and touched upon the skin on the shoulder of a man. A man slowly cracking open ice blue eyes while simultaneously tightening the hold he had on the dark-haired woman in his arms.

I had all but given up on finding the one that I could fall into
On the day before you
I was ready to settle for less than love and not much more
There was no such thing as a dream come true
Oh, but that was all the day before you

Gregory House stared down at the sleeping bundle of Lisa Cuddy that was snuggled up against his side and contemplated his life before this…whatever they had. He shied away from calling it a "relationship" because, after all, she was his boss. But they had something. And he wondered how he'd ever managed to get along without it, without her.

Now you're here and everything's changing
Suddenly life means so much
I can't wait to wake up tomorrow
And find out this promise is true
I will never have to go back to the day before you

His rapid-fire thoughts soon turned to Stacy. Did he feel this way when he was with her? Narrowing his eyes, he realized that he couldn't remember. Sure, he could remember what her face looked like, what her hair smelled like, what her body felt like, but those memories were numb, distanced.

Had he ever really loved her? More importantly, was what he felt for the woman currently lying next to him really love?

In your eyes I see forever
It makes me wish that my life never knew the day before you
Oh, but Heaven knows those years without you
Were shapin' my heart for the day that I found you
If you're the reason for all that I've been through
Then I'm thankful for the day before you

"House?"

He turned his head at the sleepy murmur of her voice.

"Hey," he replied softly, moving up slightly so he could curl her more comfortably into his body while resting his chin on her head.

She burrowed her face into her shoulder and looked up at him with wide, sea green eyes—eyes that were remarkably childlike just awakened from slumber. He'd always loved her eyes. They were so expressive. Every little thought that flickered through her head was reflected somehow through those eyes.

He smiled and kissed the top of her head. He'd learned a lot from that little glance.

He'd learned that she felt warm and safe and comfortable. He'd learned that she was just about ready to go back to sleep. He'd learned that she loved him and forever really was an option.

And he'd learned that she knew he knew it too.

Now you're here and everything's changing
Suddenly life means so much
I can't wait to wake up tomorrow
And find out this promise is true
I will never have to go back to the day before you

Maybe this was God's reward for having made it through everything his depressing life had thrown at him. Though he probably could have dealt with his lot with a bit more grace, at least he'd managed. And, he realized suddenly, if he had to go through all of it over again he would…if it meant getting her in the end.

Was the last day that I ever lived alone
And I'm never goin' back, no, I'm never goin' back

Now you're here and everything's changing
Suddenly life means so much
I can't wait to wake up tomorrow
And find out this promise is true
I will never have to go back to
The day before you, the day before you

He was done with loneliness. He was done with misery. He was done with pain and suffering and passing out each night with a bottle of bourbon still nestled in his hand. He still didn't expect much, but now he knew that he didn't need much.

All he needed was her.
