Victory is everything.
It's a lesson that he's been taught since he was a child. The victors are the survivors, the losers have no glory in life. Victory has been the only thing that's important to him, his only other constant companion in life. What good will anything else do in life?
It's not until he arrives at Teikou that he realizes that maybe—just maybe—he might've been wrong.
Joining the first string on the first try is quite easy, but he isn't the only one who makes it. Blue, Green, Purple, they all make it. It isn't until Blue finds Black in the fourth gym that his friendship with the so-called miracles truly starts.
(It's only because it's efficient, he tries convincing himself, the only person he needs is himself.)
He will never admit it to anyone but perhaps the reason he starts joining their regular ice cream outings is due to a certain captain. Red's never had anyone look after him—someone who genuinely cares, who isn't paid to—and he starts considering them a family. All of them.
And then, their captain faints in practice because he keeps overworking himself and shit starts hitting the fan. Their captain—he isn't their captain anymore, he left them like everyone else—resigns from the club, handing the title of captain over to his red-haired kouhai. And everyone tries because they know that Red is a good captain but nothing is the same without their real captain.
It starts with Blue, like a rapid disease, until the only people left are Green, Black, and the newest recruit, Yellow.
He's scared that things will change, that he'll be left behind again. So, he changes, becomes uncaring towards his teammates.
Victory is everything.
But victory is what makes him lose all those he holds dear, makes them leave him.
Victory is nothing.
(And if anyone notices that his new team seems a lot like his miracles, then it must be a coincidence.)
