Part of him wished that it hadn't been Jeff and Lester up on that stage in front of them. It didn't exactly make the situation any less awkward. But then, when hadn't it been awkward between him and Sarah?

Chuck glanced at her quickly, and noticed that she was watching him too. But she dropped her gaze to the floor as soon as he turned his head. It was always going to be like this, wasn't it? But at least the two Buymore employees were singing the right words. "I'll fight for you." She had to know that he would fight for her every day for the rest of his life.

He had seen that look on her face. The look when she thought he was dead. For the life of him he couldn't work out what it meant. Why did it have to be so complicated? He never knew what she was thinking. She had been taught not to show her emotions; taught that it would protect her. There was no room for feelings in the CIA. She had been burying them for so long that Chuck couldn't read her. But he had seen the look.

Chuck watched Jeffster on stage, grinning as Lester threw his arms in the air and paraded around as though he was King of the world. It took him a minute to register that Sarah was speaking.

"I wanted to apologise," she said, just loud enough for him to hear her over the roar of the crowd and the music. He turned to her and saw that for the first time since the car had blown up she was meeting his gaze. "I could have been more sensitive before," she continued. "About your friendship with Morgan."

He frowned. It was a strange world when Sarah Walker was apologising to him for insensitivity. Maybe those feelings and emotions weren't buried so deep after all. She was still reserved, but at least he was getting something out of her.

"It's just…" she paused and moistened her lips, as though not sure whether or not she wanted to carry on. He hoped she did, but unlike so many other times he wouldn't push it. If she needed space, then that is what he would give her. "It's difficult… I don't really have anyone in my life like that who… who cares about me."

She looked back at the stage and Chuck stared at her incredulously. How could she not know? After all that they had been through, how could she not know how he felt about her? He didn't exactly go out of his way to hide his feelings like she did.

He didn't make an effort to stop his reply and the words fell easily from his lips. "Yeah you do."

Sarah turned to look at him and he saw something in her eyes that he didn't usually see. He wasn't sure what it was, but she gave him a small smile and he returned it, knowing she understood his meaning.

Not wanting to make more of it than it was, he reached over and gently took her hand, entwining his fingers in hers. He didn't move any closer to her, and he didn't look at her. For her part though, she didn't pull away but he didn't sneak a peak at her, watching Jeff and Lester instead.

"Hey guys." Morgan wandered over, his arm once more around Anna Wu's shoulders. Chuck was glad to see they were back together. It made his friend happy, after all. And even if Chuck couldn't have the easy romance that Morgan had he just wanted his best friend to be contented.

"Look at us, man," said Morgan grinning. "We both got girlfriends." Chuck couldn't help but chuckle at the proud look on Morgan's face. "This is as good as it gets, man."

He turned to watch the stage and Chuck glanced at Sarah, a brief smiled flitted across her face before she looked away again. Lowering his head, he looked at their joined hands and out of the corner of his eye saw her do the same.

Their relationship may have been complicated but this, right now, this was simple.
