I'm awoken by a soldier of the royal guard knocking on my door ,it's the middle of the night this cant be good
"Sir its the Phoenix king, its urgent" I quickly don my uniform and head toward the throne room but the soldier calls out
"I was told to escort you to the royal bedrooms sir" bedroom? I didn't think the Phoenix king bent that way
We head towards the royal chambers and there is already a crowd
"Make way for the war minister!" My escort bellows. I smile on the inside, rank has its privilege, Princess Azula is already inside The firelord is laying on the bed he isn't moving
"My father has departed the world"
Azula says her voice is panged with sadness,
I walk to the body, I see the color has already faded from his skin
"My condolences princess" then A thought occurred
"Where is firelord Zuko?" I ask, Azula tenses up I've just made a mistake
"Zuko" she leaves out his title but I realize correcting her could lead to me being ash "is currently On a airship heading toward ember island he left a few hours ago,"
"I shall send a message telling him to arrive" I say but Azula shakes her head
"That will not be necessary war minister." she says in a tone that warns against argument "Allow zuzu some fun in the sun and he can return later"
I cant believe what im hearing zuko is next in line to the thrown he should be summoned immediately!
"princess with all due respect Zuko must return here in all haste we need him to assume control of the empire!"
Azula shook her head and fixed me with a predatory smile
"that's where your wrong war minister. you see my father always favored me over little zuzu and he intended to announce me as his successor"
I was Shocked.
"princess do you have any proof to these claims?" Azula fixed me with a predatory smile
"As a matter of fact war minister I do. Colonel cheng get in here!"
Colonel cheng was the head of the royal guard and a distinguished veteran of the war, more importantly I knew he was an honorable man.
"Yes princess?" cheng asked
"show the war minister my fathers will"
I took the will and read it carefully checking for any discrepancies in the firelords hand writing and found none. It was authentic
I realized I was in a precarious position I had just questioned the legitimacy of the new Phoenix king{queen?} my career and probably my life may very well be in danger
I bowed deeply to Azula and she raised an eyebrow and gave a little smirk, I wanted to smack it off her face,
"My apologize My queen"
I said in the most servile tone I could muster, I wanted to vomit but that would be most unbecoming of a War Minister,
"Apology accepted War Minister Tsui, next time However I trust you will never question anything I say again"
her voice was pleasant, almost gentle but I only needed to look into her cold eyes to realize I had just been given a rather dire warning.

The next few days consisted mostly of giving reports to Azula letting here know of the state the empire was in. these were only formalities really considering Azula often sat in every meeting the council had when Ozai was still alive. By the end of the week I was numb with boredom and was preparing to take a week of under the pretense of conducting a inspection of the Units stationed to guard the Homeland when A messenger barged into the meeting room unannounced.
Azula fixed the man with an angry glare and was obviously about to tear into him fore the grievous breach of protocol when the man said
"My Queen I have urgent news. The armies Stationed in the northern water tribe have rebelled and declared your brother the true phoenix king!"
there was a stunned silence there were nearly sixty thousand men stationed in the water tribes. The thought of fire nation soldiers rebelling Against their sovereign was unthinkable. Azula looked furious
"That filthy traitor"
she said calmly
"He steals my fucking mother now he thinks he can steal my empire." she said with remarkable self control, considering the situation. Everyone in the room had an uncomfortable look on their face, it was well known that bringing up former fire lady Ursa's name in Azula's presence was a bad idea
"I will burn him alive" she said voice deathly calm but her body was still shaking with rage "along with his little whore Mai and the rest of his filthy family."
the chancellor was the first to speak up
"We will stand with you no matter what your highness"
Azula let out a mocking laugh
"of course you will if you don't you can join my brother in hell"
the chancellor sputtered obviously he expected a different reaction but before he said anything Azula interrupted
"I want an invasion forced formed immediately I will lead it myself and war minister tsui will accompany me, we must destroy this rebellion before it can spread"
I'm not surprised by Azula wanting to lead the army herself and realize it will be pointless in trying to dissuade her instead I inform her it will take at least several month to bring the necessary forces to bear against zuko's army
"you have one month war minister" she says icily "if not then I'm sure I can find a replacement, now everyone leave"

Azula

I watch everyone leave the room and then wait until I'm sure they are out of hearing range, then I let out a scream, I pound my fist against the table and I curse that bastard of a brother HOW DARE HE! is he really stupid enough to think that he would be better at ruling the empire. No the little idiot would lose everything in a month he doesn't have the strength to rule only I have the strength only I know the measures necessary to keep the world under the control of our great nation father realized this he recognized strength he recognized genius! Mother all she valued was weakness, softness no wonder she always favored zuko over me! She was afraid of my strength of my genius, of my greatness that's why she always schemed against me! that's why she always hated me! I wouldn't be surprised if she had something to do with this! yes no doubt she finally found little zuzu after all these years no doubt she put him up to this! yes it all makes sense now zuzu would dare do anything like this he's to weak, to indecisive someone must of put him up to this!
"well it wont work mother" I say to the phantom who has always haunted me "it wont work!"
