Rude's silence tricks people into assuming he is a deep thinker, but really he's planning his comebacks to Reno. His comrade – friends don't break heads together – has a natural silver tongue and rapid-fire jokes at his command. Rude has to practice the delivery of a joke in his head a thousand times.
"He makes you happy," he says to Reno, beginning his joke.
"I guess, yo."
"You deserve –"
"Unless that sentence ends with… a bullet to the brain, stop."
The joke dies; it always falls apart, because he can't predict Reno half of the conversation.
