Luffy could smell a rat. There was something going on with Torao and he wanted to know what. It's not like he didn't want Law to be happy, on the contrary he was glad of it. For the couple of days after Doflamingo's defeat whilst they had been recuperating, all he had been doing was stare out of the window. Due to the Sunny not being around and needing to wait for their injuries to heal more, they had planned to stay in Dressrosa for a couple of weeks. Law had managed to reattach his arm easily enough but he might as well have just left it.
All he did was stare out of the window, no matter what Luffy did to try and cheer him up. Luffy wondered what was going on in his head. Was he sad? Did he not know what to do with his life now? Was he just tired? Luffy couldn't be sure. Whatever he was thinking, it wasn't anything that made him smile.
However that had all changed today. Law had opened the window when something had banged against the window and looked down before something else had hit him straight in the face. That something was a scrunched up ball of paper. Luffy had looked on curiously whilst Law had unscrunched the paper and scanned the page. The shock on his face was apparent within seconds of looking at the paper and he was once again at the window, looking for whoever had thrown the paper. His eyes had locked onto someone and soon he was hastily pulling on a shirt to go out.
"Where are you going Torao?" Luffy had asked. Law had hardly got off the windowsill since he woke up after the battle with Doflamingo, only leaving it to eat and do his business.
"Somewhere. If I'm late Straw-hat-ya don't come looking for me." And then Law was gone and out of the door, looking for whoever he had spotted outside the window.
He hadn't come back till late at night and though he maintained a neutral face Luffy could sense the happiness radiating off him and he could see the spring in his step.
"What were you doing?"
"Things." Law had said vaguely before he'd flopped into bed.
And now Luffy hardly ever saw him anymore. As soon as Law woke up, he'd always be getting prepared to go out and was out of the door within minutes, gone for the whole day.
Luffy decided he needed to follow him. It was in his nature to be nosy and this seemed like an adventure. He was bored anyway and nobody was really paying attention to him.
Luffy's first attempt was a failure. He'd tried his best to follow behind him quietly but Law must have seen or heard or maybe just sensed him because Luffy had lost his trail as soon as he had turned down an alley. Luffy tried his best to find him again but he wasn't anywhere in the immediate area of where he had been. Luffy returned home, vowing to try again the next day.
"Hey Usopp, d'ya feel like helping me follow someone?"
"Luffy, before I even ask who it is, why are you following someone?"
"It's Torao, he's been fishy and stuff."
"Luffy! Why him? Just let him go mind his own business."
Luffy explained the events that had occurred a couple of days ago while Usopp just slowly nodded. Usopp was already starting to get an idea of what was happening.
"Yes, from what you have told me I can conclude that Torao has... A SECRET LOVER!"
"Wow really! How did you get that?" Luffy exclaimed before quickly shaking his head. "No, that can't be, Torao isn't like that."
"Well Luffy, you never know, he doesn't say much about himself. He could be a ladies man for all you know."
Luffy sat down and contemplated this possibility. Did this mean Torao had a girlfriend then? Or could it be something else?
"What if it's like that time Robin left?"
Usopp gasped then "N-no definitely no- ah fuck it, let's go follow him. I sense a mystery that I, Usopp the great, need to solve."
"First though Luffy, we need disguises."
And that's how Usopp and Luffy came to be following Law around Dressrosa. After a few failed attempts they managed to find a way to follow him from a safe distance without him noticing. They trailed him for a good 15 minutes or so before they stopped as Law sat on a bench and, well, waited.
"Who's he waiting for?"
"Ssh Luffy, just wait."
They'd been waiting in an alley for so long they were almost falling asleep when they heard a thump. They looked up to see a huge man in a black feathery coat on the floor, the banana peel he had slipped on a couple of meters away. Law rose from his bench and moved to help the man up, light-heartingly scolding him whilst doing so. This appeared to be the person Law was waiting for.
Law and the mystery man walked off then and entered a nearby cafe.
"Luffy we need to go in, we can't see much from here."
They waited a few minutes before they came in and took the opportunity to sit in the booth next to the pair when Law left to go order at the counter. Trying ever so hard not to be conspicuous they listened in the conversation next to them.
"So Law, how has your arm been?"
"Hm, just fine,I get a couple of pains from time to time but it's nothing I can't handle."
"What would you have done if you couldn't reattach it?"
"No problem, I'd just use something else."
"What, like a dinosaur arm?"
"Don't be ridiculous, I wouldn't be able to do surgery with something bulky like that and it wouldn't fit properly anyway."
"What about X Drake? He's a dinosaur zoan."
Law snorted at that. "Hah, no. As if I'd do that Cora-san"
Usopp spat his drink out. "C-c-cora-san!?"
"Well at least you were able to reverse Doflamingo's damage."
"Don't talk about that bastard here."
"You just don't want to admit that you called him aniki at one point."
"That was before you went and abducted me."
Usopp just could not believe how wacky this conversation was getting. What was the history between these two?
"Yeah yeah, it was for your own good."
"Yeah and I love you."
This time Corazon spat his drink out and started choking. Law moved over and gave him a couple of pats on the back, oblivious to the completely stunned pirates sitting in the booth next to them.
"What's with that face!?"
"Y-you just said I love you..."
"Jeez, still the same as always, the next thing I know, you're going to set yourself on fire."
"Also I don't think now is a good time to say those people in the booth next to you heard you confess your love to me."
"What?"
Luffy and Usopp jumped a little at the fact he had known they were listening all along and had sheepish faces when they saw Law look into their booth. As soon as Law recognised who they were, he winced and ducked back.
"Corazon, we're leaving."
"There's no point trying to hide the san, they heard you call me Cora-san already."
"Shut up!"
Law promptly made a room and teleported them out of there.
All those two could do was stare at each other with utter shock.
"Torao really does have a secret lover..."
"And it's a 10ft odd tall guy..."
Now that Law was on high alert Usopp and Luffy could no longer follow him without him looking behind his back every few minutes and teleporting himself away if he saw them. So they decided to ask for someone else's help.
"Psst Robin."
Robin looked up from the book she was reading and chuckled at the two faces peering at her from the other side of the table.
"What is it Luffy-kun, Usopp-kun?"
"Do you know how we can spy on someone without them detecting us?"
"Who may I ask are you spying on hmmm?"
Usopp and Luffy looked sheepishly at each other and nervously grinned at Robin. "It's Toraooo."
Luffy once again repeated the events that had led to Law's mysterious outings and Usopp recounted their attempts to spy on him.
"That sounds quite interesting, especially the bit about his secret lover."
"Well I'm not really sure if Torao does have a lover but I can tell they are close."
"I'll help you myself then."
Robin crossed her arms in her characteristic pose and closed her eyes.
"What you doing Robin?"
"I'm watching Torao-kun now."
"Oh yeah you can sprout eyes and stuff can't you?"
"Well? What's he doing?"
"Walking...with some guy."
"Oh! That must be his secret lover then!"
"Tell us what's happening Robin!"
"And don't forget the voices!"
Robin concentrated on the scene hard and did her best to relay what was happening.
Law and the man were in the market, looking at fruit. Law idly picked up an orange with a faint smirk on his face.
"You like oranges?" The mystery man asked
"Kinda, oranges are just making me think of Nami-ya now."
"Oh wow Law you have a girlfriend?"
"S-stop bullshitting Cora-san! You know who Nami-ya is and she's not my girlfriend."
"Whatever you say." Cora-san teased
"That reminds me, have you managed to get yourself a girl?"
Cora-san looked kind of stunned and dejected.
"I guess that means a no. Well, one day, maybe you'll find," Law picked up an apple, "the apple to your eye."
"Your poetic ness makes me think of Doffy."
Law stared down at the apple he was holding now in absolute disgust. "Eww don't compare me to him."
"Say... If you had to marry Dof-"
"Cora-san I'm not gay."
"But you're not asexual and don't say you're not romantic."
"Are you really going to play the marriage game?"
"If you had to marry Doffy or Vergo whic-"
"I wouldn't marry either of those bastards. Stop asking silly questions Cora-san jeez, what are you 10?"Law paid for the produce they'd bought and they began to walk away from the market.
"Well if I'm 10 that'd make you 5."
"I didn't mean literally"
"You can't ignore the fact I'm like twice your age though."
"Just shut up already."
Robin decided to end it there and opened her eyes to the completely stunned faces staring at her.
Usopp and Luffy turned to each other.
What kind of shit had they got themselves into this time?
Over the course of the next few days Robin found herself constantly being plagued to spy on Law for Usopp and Luffy and most of the time she obliged. She wasn't complaining, she got to see a lot of interesting things.
Sometimes Law and Corazon (as she learnt was his name) would be sat in a cafe together, exchanging anecdotes. Other times they would be out and about in various places in Dressrosa. Shops, museums, even a haunted house at one point (where Corazon was scared completely shitless and constantly clinging to a fearless Law). You name it, she saw them there (except not in a love hotel but you get what I mean)
She also noticed that they always watched the sunset on top of a small hill somewhere, leaning against the lone tree that grew there. It was on one of these occasions that she witnessed a small moment of intimacy that she decided to keep secret from Luffy and Usopp for Law's privacy.
She had been watching them for a while and was about to stop because the two had fallen asleep and were as unmoving as logs when a movement caught her eye. Law was lying with his head in Corazon's lap who was sat with his back leaning against the tree. Both of them had been sleeping soundly until now.
Law was now shuffling around restlessly and he had a strained expression on his face. Robin watched intently to see how Law would react to whatever nightmare he was having. Corazon was beginning to stir when Law explosively woke up. He shot straight up then but soon fell back down. He fell on his side and didn't make any move to get up. His eyes were staring at the grass but not really seeing it and his hands clenched and unclenched several times. His leg twitched like a cricket stuck in a spider's web. His expression held a fear unlike anything Robin had seen on him before.
Corazon sleepily opened his eyes and noticed there was weight missing from his lap and he turned his head looking for Law. He gasped when he saw Law having a panic attack and grabbed him to move him closer. He clasped Law against his chest and ruffled his hair.
"Law, Law, it's ok, calm down."
Law was still panting hard and didn't appear to have heard him so he just hugged him tighter. He was shivering even though it was still about 20 degrees and the sun hadn't set too far down yet. He was rendered unresponsive by the panic attack and all he did was hang limply in Corazon's embrace. Corazon shook off his feather coat and proceeded to wrap it around Law.
In time, Law managed to slowly lift an arm to grip the back of Corazon's shirt and he begun to cry on his shoulder.
"Were you dreaming about Flevance again?"
All Law could do was nod as he sniffled. He got a few gentle pats on the back as a response. It was a while before Law fell asleep again and Corazon smiled slightly at the man, glad to see he was sleeping peacefully again.
Robin was glad that Luffy and Usopp hadn't been around when she witnessed the scene; if they were here they would have pestered her for what was happening. At least she could pretend she didn't see anything.
It was time to leave Dressrosa now. As much as they had all enjoyed their stay, they were eager to reunite with their friends, especially Law who had not seen his crew in several months. They all stood on the deck of the ship that was going to carry them to Zou and they were waving off the Riku family as the ship sailed (except Zoro and Law who just gave a small nod and a smile.)
As the ship left the dock and Dressrosa slipped from view, they all began to disperse to do their own things. Law stalked over to the door of the room he was staying in.
"Hey Torao, are you ok with leaving your boyfriend behind?"
"Whatever are you talking about Straw-hat-ya?"
As soon as Law opened the door however, he was instantly knocked to the ground and he was smothered by a mass of black feathers.
"Law! You took your time getting to your room. I surprised you there didn't I?"
"Mmmfgfbmpgmg"
Corazon then realised he was unintentionally smothering him and leaned back away from him. He sat cross-legged on the floor whilst he waited for Law to catch his breath.
"What the hell are you doing here?!"
"I want to join your crew Law!"
"What?"
Law was dumbfounded. By contrast, Luffy was extremely interested by the newcomer/stowaway.
"Ohhhh, are you Torao's boyfriend."
"Ooh, you have a cute nickname Torao."
"Oh shut up, don't call me that too. And no he's not my boyfriend, he's my...my..." Law struggled to think of the right word for their relationship. "Well, let's just say we are very close."
There was a small silence.
"And didn't I tell you not to follow me!" Law exclaimed
"I don't want to stay away from you, not when we've just got back together."
"Yeah but it's dangerous with me, you're better off settling on a quiet island somewhere..."
"I'm not useless Law! Just because you have a overpowered devil fruit doesn't mean you can ignore the fact that I have one too!"
"Your's is useless though! You can't do shit with it!"
Corazon dejectedly backed down;what he was saying was kind of true. It was only really useful for infiltrations and sneaking around. Not much use in battle.
"Ooh you have a devil fruit! What's it like?"
"Wait Straw-hat-ya don't boost his ego-"
"I ate the Nagi-Nagi fruit! I can make sound barriers."
Corazon made a barrier and then proceeded to smash a vase on the floor (goodness knows where he got that from.) Luffy was instantly amazed in comparison to Law who sported a completely unamused face. He sighed.
"Cora-san, don't do that here." He looked up and was confronted with a completely surprised face.
"What?"
"You called me Cora-san..."
"Oh give over! You're used to that, stop being so surprised."
The conversation ended abruptly yet again before Law coughed and got back to the issue.
"So the point is, it's way too dangerous to be travelling with me."
"Just let me stay Law." Corazon looked up. "I can be useful."
"But-"
"I don't want to go back to that time when we didn't know what was happening to each other, when you thought i was dead and I couldn't do anything to get back in touch with you."
Law stayed silent.
"It's ok for us to be together now. You're free now;from your illness, from Doffy, from your guilt. Let's just stay together, that way we won't ever lose contact again."
Law looked up. "Ok."
