WEATHERING THE STORM
By: Vanessa Sgroi
The wind howled, its fury kicking up the waves on the small lake to mountainous proportions. Each gust sent walls of water at the two figures standing on the shore, repeatedly drenching them.
Dean coughed against the onslaught of water and continued his incantation over the three oddly-shaped stones in his palm. His eyes frequently wandered to his brother who lay slumped unconscious next to him. Another wave slammed into them, forcing Dean to his knees. He shook his head and wiped the water from his eyes.
With a not-so-mighty heave, he cast the first stone. He mumbled a few more words through the shivers wracking his frame then cast the second stone. The final words were nearly incomprehensible given the chattering of his teeth. With every bit of strength he had left in him, Dean cast the third stone with a curse and sank back on his heels.
Even though he'd not thought it possible, the wind picked up, its howl becoming a scream. Dean covered his ears and winced. The white-capped waves crashed and roared with promised vengeance.
"C'mon. C'mon, you bitch..." whispered Dean.
And then as suddenly as the artificial storm had sprung up, it was done. The wind abruptly died and the water calmed. Knees sinking deeper in the mud, Dean slumped forward and gathered Sam into his arms. "We did it, Sam. We did it." He pulled him closer and paused to rest for a second. "Now let's get you the hell outta here. I hate to say it, but a trip to the ER is in your future."
Sam moaned as if in protest.
"Hey, no arguing."
"No' arguing," mumbled Sam on a whisper. "Was saying 'you too'."
"What? I don't need the ER."
"Right. I go, you go."
