February heard lots of shouting coming from the Lieutenant's corridor. Something about not putting the zappers away correctly.
They were at it again.
"You know it's not always my fault!" Krayonder yelled, punching his hand at the wall.
"No?" Taz snapped. "Then how is it that when you're on duty, in charge of a teensy little thing like recharging the zappers, the zappers aren't charged?"
"Taz, I don't know, man!" Krayonder's cheeks were flushed. "I thought I charged 'em correctly."
"But did you? Noooo. You can't do anything right, you-"
"Hey, at least I don't flirt with the commander!"
Krayonder's tone chilled the air.
"What did you say?" Taz asked, slowly moving her hand to her dagger.
"I said, 'At least I don't flirt with the commander.' Would you like me to translate it for ya?"
Taz stood up. "Take that back."
"Why, 'cause it's true? I've seen the way he looks at you, how he always tries to get close to you, how-"
"We're friends, ese!"
"Yeah, well what does that make me?"
The silence was enough of an answer. Krayonder walked to the door.
"Krayonder," Taz said quietly. There was no reply as he walked out.
"Krayonder!" She threw the knife, and there was a thud as it hit the closing door.
Idiota, Taz thought, tears welling up in her eyes. Their whole relationship, they'd fought. It would be over the little things, and the yelling would escalate. They were never violent to each other, minus the one time that Taz punched him. He looked so hurt that she promised that it would never happen again. Tonight was close though. What he said about Up... Well, it was true. Up liked her, and she did flirt with him, but she had Krayonder.
Their relationship had begun with fights. They were in the middle of one when Krayonder kissed her, and she kissed him back. It had been a crazy four months. It was nice in the beginning, and they were happy, but things were getting worse rapidly.
Taz sniffled as she walked to the door. Wiping away tears, she knew what had to happen next. She opened her door, but the hallway wasn't empty.
Krayonder was in front of her, holding a bottle of tequila in one hand, and a bottle of beer in the other.
"Krayonder?" she asked.
He was silent as he handed her the liquor. Taz took a swig from the bottle and saw that Krayonder's eyes looked as if they were in another galaxy. They sat on the bed, drinking in silence.
"Krayonder," Taz began, trying to keep her voice from betraying her. "This is- I don't know how- this isn't- we're not-"
"We should end this," Krayonder said softly. "We're no good for each other."
"No... We're not."
"So this is it? This is goodbye?"
"I don't want it to be. Krayonder, stay with me tonight."
"One last night?"
"No fights-"
"Just us-"
"The way it used to be."
"And then I'll leave you in the morning."
"And life goes on."
Krayonder looked at Taz peacefully sleeping next to him. She was beautiful. He didn't want to wake her up, but if she woke up with him there, the cycle could continue. He had to leave.
What he wouldn't do to have her with him forever, but it wasn't meant to be. They'd kill each other if their relationship continued. Krayonder kissed Taz's forehead and walked out the door. He looked left and saw Commander Up walking into a conference room.
"Sir!" Krayonder ran towards the commander.
"Yes, private?" Up asked.
"Take care of her for me," Krayonder said, tears forming in his eyes. "She deserves the best."
