Once was an accident. Twice was coincidence.
"Three times," he told Ace, "is grounds for reprisal."
Ace grinned at him. "You've just made that up," she told him.
"Hmmm, adapted it rather," he corrected her. "It all means much the same thing, really."
"Seriously?"
He nodded. "Oh yes. It means this." He tossed the snowball he'd hidden behind his back. Ace dodged it and retaliated. He threw the snowball he'd held in reserve in his pocket. Ducking it, Ace fell head first into a snow bank.
"Having a Happy Christmas, Ace?" he asked lightly.
Another snowball was her only answer.
