The humans on that continent were all converted forcefully into vampires, a process which rarely succeeds; for those who managed to become a vampire successfully, they get to enjoy glory and riches for the rest of their lives, while those who wouldn't go were all caught and turned into the lycanthropes we see today, and made into their servants or bodyguards (the only canine like features for female lycanthropes like Chikane are their canine ears and tail, since the vampires are known for their canine fetishes… you know where this is going), and for those who failed… well, they died.
That coven lasted for a very long time until the lycanthropes revolted, if I remember correctly, that revolt was caused by a star crossed love between a vampire and her lycanthrope soul mate, whose names I forgot, the rebel army started by these girls (that's right, these lover were both girls) are smart enough to ally themselves with the neutral superpower nations of the Reploids and the Youkai respectively, and the coven was eventually destroyed within a year (since the coven themselves are pretty much corrupted to begin with that year).
Now that history lesson is over, let's get back to the story.
Himeko used to be one of the coven but she banished herself simply because she just wanted to be free, and so back then, she just left without saying a word. The real reason is that, she was ignored by her family while her siblings outshine her.
Himeko settled into a tiny town beyond her continent, where she met little Chikane being bullied by other kids because of her ears and tail, Himeko went to her rescue and the two orphans of different circumstances lived together ever since.
Their first night together, was very sexy.
