Chapter 1

"I hate you" screamed fourteen year old Mary Jo Carmella. "You know I didn't wanna move here! Can't we just go back to New York" she cried, tears dripping down her pale face.

"Jo, Tulsa is our new home" sighed Mr. Carmella. "Accept it, we're stayin"

"No, mum says in a few days everything'll be okay and we can go back" she stammered.

Mr. Carmella shook his balding head "Sure honey, sure"

Jo shook her head of thick wavy auburn hair and ran out of the beat up scrubby house. Her greenish grey eyes clouded with tears and she began to run down the street. They'd moved to the east end of Tulsa, the poor end. But they were poor, so it made sense.

Jo was running with her head down and her eyes glued to the cement sidewalk when she crashed into someone and fell on the ground. "Oww" she moaned, not caring who it was that seen her cry, they were going to leave her soon anyways. Right? Wrong. The person who'd knocked Jo down approached her and put a hand on her shoulder

"Are you okay?" a soft male voice asked.

"Im fine…leave me alone" she sobbed

"Well, yall don't look fine" the boy said sitting down on the sidewalk beside her; he put his arm around her shoulders. Jo didn't know why, but she leaned against him and cried. "It's gonna be alright…" the boy stopped, realizing that he didn't yet know her name.

"Jo" she sobbed "My names Jo Carmella"

"That's a nice name, I'm Ponyboy Curtis" the boy sighed. He waited for her to crack a joke or ask him if that was his real name.

"That's a very lovely and original name" she stated, finally getting a hold of herself. Jo wiped away her tears and looked at the boy for the first time. He was taller than her, but not by much, and he had long reddish brown hair and greeny grey eyes. He wore a tight black t-shirt which showed off his muscles, and a pair of ripped blue jeans. She smiled lightly "Thanks"

"You're welcome" Ponyboy said "Anytime"

"But why?" Jo asked

"Why what?"

"Why did you comfort me, I mean you don't even know me" she stammered pushing back her think rusty red hair.

Ponyboy shrugged "You looked sad"

"Oh" she stuttered "Thanks, I uh, just moved here with my dad, and well I hate it. That's why I was you know, crying"

"Ah" Ponyboy nodded in understanding "I've lived here all my life"

"Yeah, well I have no friends, and well I'm not well off" her green eyes darted to the sement sidewalk.

"I can relate" Ponyboy sighed flipping back his red brown hair. "And you know, I'll be your friend"

"Really?" Jo laughed

"Why not" he smirked. "Come on, I'll introduce to my other friends"

"Sure" Jo smiled a bit uneasily. She had no idea what she'd gotten herself into.
