We always win
Sure it's hard sometimes but as a team we fight together.
Why is this so hard?
I dodge a kick to my face and feel a whoosh of air rush by my ear.
We fight we win, it's so simple.
I parry another kick with my boi.
If we know we're going to win why do we struggle so much?
My boi connects with an arm. A hand jerks around to snatch it out of my grasp.
We don't always win.
The thought hit me as hard as Slade's fist.
Pain.
I was on my knees holding my face.
I waited for Star to cover for me and attack Slade with her beams. I waited for Cyborg to take him down with Beast Boy at his side. I waited for Raven to envelop him in darkness...
I waited.
Nothing.
No, just more pain.
Another kick, this time connecting with its target, for this time I had no weapon to protect myself with. The force of the heavy metal boot to the side of my head sent me to the floor, hard.
The pain was overwhelming, the pain in my head.
Was my face broken?
Can faces break?
My mind raced, I hoped for anything to happen, anything that would help me, anything but what he said,
"You're mine now Robin."
The words echoed, not only in my head but throughout the empty warehouse.
They were gone.
I thought I could handle it.
The "we" had become "me", only me.
Alone.
Weren't they going to back me up? They always would show at the last moment to save the day.
I never told them I left.
My communicator!
I touched shattered metal around my belt where the device once was.
"No." I whispered
"Where are you!" My yell echoed.
My yell was almost cut off by the punch to my mouth.
I was still on my knees, I looked toward the ground.
The cuff of my shirt was grabbed and I was lifed to my feet. Rough hands brushed dirt from my shirt and face.
"There, there, Robin, allright now?"
The cuff was released and I fell back to my knees.
"Get up."
Slade and the voice in my head had simotaniously spoken.
I tried.
I failed.
I saw the kick coming but didn't care, my friends weren't coming to help me.
It came fast and brutal, squarely at my chest. My lungs emptied and I choked on nothingness. I doubled over and felt a drop of liquid roll down my cheek.
Was I crying?
I touched my face and looked down at the crimson stain on my glove.
"I told you Robin, you can join me or die. Either is fine with me, but I particularly enjoy your suffering."
His voice, smooth and dangerous, ended with a deep laugh.
I dispised that sound.
I would have tried to get back up. The broken ribs were a bit of a problem though.
The hand returned to the cuff and I was at my feet...
past my feet...
The tips of my boots scuffed the floor.
"They're not coming."
I had said it outloud.
Slade's eye looked me over.
"Oh? And who would they be?"
He laughed.
I hated that laugh.
I swung my fist at wherever I thought the mouth was on his mask, I needed the sound to stop.
He let go of the cuff and I fell swinging. I missed but...
I landed on my feet!
No!
My knees gave way. I could not stand any longer.
I was on all fours breathing heavily, staring at the ground.
Blood fell to the floor in a staccado. My ear were ringing...
Slade still had possesion of my boi.
I never saw him raise it and begin to bring it down towards the back of my head.
I waited.
I waited for Star to cover for me and attack Slade with her beams. I waited for Cyborg to take him down with Beast Boy at his side. I waited for Raven to envelop him in darkness...
The darkness did come...
only not for Slade.
I don't always win.
